We are trying to order the newest laptops E6230 and E6530. Dell has removed the previous options to include Roxio and Cyberlink from these newer laptops. Wendy (our rep) has tried to get them included but couldn't. She explains that Windows can do what they do. She referred me to http://www.ideastorm.com/ hoping that somebody higher at Dell can fix this.

Windows media player lacks the CODECS needed to play DVD movies on its own. That's why the Cyberlink PowerDVD came in handy. Dell suggested the option to use 3rd party free CODECs such as VLC player. On some laptops, it VLC broke the sound card driver and caused loss of sound.

Windows direct DVD burning lacks some important features that are offered in the Roxio DVD burning software. In particular you can't create disc image files (ISO) using Windows, but if you have the ISO then Windows Disc Image Burner can burn it to CD\DVD.
Roxio can create the ISO.

Thus we are requesting to leave the ROXIO CD/DVD Burning software AND Cyberlink PowerDVD options available like before.

Thanks.

We too got stung by this - having purchased machines across the D5xx series all the way through E6x30 series I was rather upset that Dell decided to save a few pennies by stopping offering ECDS and PowerDVD as an add-in option.  Why now?  Why in the middle of a machine family series? (I could see this in when they transition to the F series of machines, if there will be one)  Windows 7's built in "replacements" are no substitute for either 3rd party app, for reasons the OP mentioned above.  It isn't that the software won't magically run on the Exx30 units - we've tested it on a 6530 and both apps run just fine.  The E6420 series will be lines retired before we know it and then you're really stuck.

William_L, They may have the Codecs, but the 3rd party software is light years better doing what it's doing.  WMP needs to stick to AVI's

thanks itadmin.  Question:  by any chance are you purchasing the systems with Media Center?  (Windows Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate?)  These versions have DVD playback CODECs included by Microsoft so there is no need for a 3rd party CODEC.
