The Alienware M17x r3's 3D controller will not allow the user to install an NVidia 680M into the machine and still be able to push 3D on the system. The problem appears to be that the M17x r3 BIOS doesn't contain the certificate needed to validate the 680M is a card that is able to push 3D.

Dell/Alienware should make the additions to the BIOS for the M17x r3 to allow this newer GPU to push 3D in the system. Additionally, the new fixes released today (7.18.12) inside of the A05 M17x r4 BIOS regarding the GPU boost technology should also be included in this BIOS update for the M17x r3.

By adding these two simple features to the M17x r3 BIOS, Dell/Alienware is enabling a considerable amount of individuals to purchase more hardware and help ensure long-lasting customer satisfaction.

    @Francisco_S:

    I am happy to hear that Dell is looking into this, thank you! I'm certain this means a lot to many R3 owners.

    I actually do not own a 680M (I hear you can get one from Eurocom though), but there is an excellent online community that has worked together to figure out what would happen if one were to attempt this specific upgrade.

    Here's the thread where we've worked together to come to this conclusion:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/672230-m17x-r3-680m-compatability-21.html

    In addition to this, we have been able to get the attention of an Alienware rep. on these forums named Luis P. He has stated that it appears to be an issue with drivers, and perhaps NOT the 3D controller itself. He also stated that the 680M has not been validated YET with the M17x R3, but expects it to be in the near future.

    I have the same case with most people in here.  I just got my R3 in early April 2012 with 580M.  I was originally waiting for R4 but there was no clear date of release during that time so I decided to get R3 and hope to upgrade hardware when they come out.  I dont have a 3D screen on my R3 but I still dont want to lose the capability of streaming 3D to external screens if I upgrade to 680M.

    I bought my m17x R3 3D GTX 580m on May 2012, now after a few months a much better graphics card (680m) is in the market and if I upgrade, i lose the ability to use 3D...... It's very disappointing.

    just bought my m17x r3 christmas of 2011. i will be upgrading to a 680m later this year when availibility ( and hopefully prices ) are better. it is unfortunate that i will probably loose 3d capability, but will be worth it to me for the much faster gpu. i have no intentions of buying another laptop for 2+ years and im sure most r3 users are in that same time frame. i dont think holding out this feature will convince anyone to upgrade to the r4 just for 3d. it will only cause r3 owners negative customer satisfaction because they cant use a feature that their equipment is capable of.
