The Alienware M17x r3's 3D controller will not allow the user to install an NVidia 680M into the machine and still be able to push 3D on the system. The problem appears to be that the M17x r3 BIOS doesn't contain the certificate needed to validate the 680M is a card that is able to push 3D.
Dell/Alienware should make the additions to the BIOS for the M17x r3 to allow this newer GPU to push 3D in the system. Additionally, the new fixes released today (7.18.12) inside of the A05 M17x r4 BIOS regarding the GPU boost technology should also be included in this BIOS update for the M17x r3.
By adding these two simple features to the M17x r3 BIOS, Dell/Alienware is enabling a considerable amount of individuals to purchase more hardware and help ensure long-lasting customer satisfaction.

Bought my M17xR3 with the 460m until the 580m could be shipped. It took me 8 months to get the 580m after being told "2 weeks" for the 1st 6 months. Now I have the 580m and it freezes my games at 60 Deg C. This laptop is useless and unless DELL can upgrade this 580m (without losing the 3D), I'll be building my own desktops from now on.Doesn't help that my 3D Laptop shipped without 3d HDMI compatibility on the mobo like I was told by the salespeople it would have. HDMI in doesn't work and HDMI out is all but useless, horrid quality on the TV.
Alienware is not my best friend as of now. $3,600 paperweight that needs to be dusted.

@Francisco_S:It's good to hear that Dell/AW is still working on this. Would you happen to have any rough ETA's on any progress regarding the 680M potential in the r3?
Thanks! :)

c'mon dell, get on with it already!...I have been thinking about buying an alienware desktop, but not if the "upsell" antics for Dell remain as they are now.Aug 8, 2012 Comment Link

Bought my M17xR3 3D with 580m in Nov 2011 under the impression that the system was upgradable, it looks like it is not, unless Dell can give us the 680m with 3D.Dont get me wrong, I love my R3, I would love it more if I knew I had at least a GPU upgrade to look forward to.

Got my R3 in sept 2011. An upgrade to the 680m would be heaven. I don't plan on purcahsing a new laptop for another year at least. If I cannot upgrade the GPU in the R3 the I will definitely go with an Orgin or Maingear machine for my next rig.Upgradability of the R3 is essenstial for long term cutomer satisfaction and loyalty to the brand.
Thanks

Hi everybody,I bought my M17xR3 last september. And I'm buying a new 680m for it. It's kinda hurt when hearing that I won't be able to use it's built-in 3D feature. I , my family and friends gonna miss that so badly. I heart that I still can use 3D feature with 3DTV via HDMI, but it's a lot more convenience with the built-in stuff, it's portable.
So Dell, please do something about this. If i'm right, we (people with this same problem) don't really care about the warranty, we just want to enjoy heavy-duty capability you Alienware give us.
I also pray for this every night (well, almost every night).

Hi Everybody!I'm Mak, and I bought my R3 in February 2012. One of the best things that I liked about the R3 for which I bought it was that I thought I could upgrade it in the future with any advanced hardware that came out. This gave me the confidence that I'd be able to enjoy the best graphics and speeds by simply upgrading rather than buying a new laptop for every new piece of tech that came out.
Fast forward to now, we're looking at the exact scenario that I had envisioned when buying my R3, we're talking about a card here that is capable of TWICE of what my current card can do. To be hindered by such a trivial technicality is just too frustrating and painful to describe in words.
The bottomline is this: I love my R3, and I bought it with the 3D because I really like that feature and use it a lot. I would like to keep the 3D and upgrade to the 680. The key to the solution of my problem is with Alienware. As makers of elite gaming machines, you guys know how gamers like me feel about this. Come on guys, help us out here, heed our pleas!
btw. I joined ideastorm just to vote for this!
I hope Alienware will make us gamers happy once again!

i also have the m17x r3, and i bought mine last september. i always felt like alienware laptops would easily be able to be upgraded with a better gpu, and for a while i have been waiting for a impressive piece of hardware to be released to help us boost performance in games and media. the 680m is our dream come true, however there is no support for it on the m17x r3 from dell/alienware. I feel we should be able to fully utilize this card along with its 3d capabilities considering that our computer is only a few months old. many users are coming together and doing everything they can to get it working on the r3. some have gotten far as to getting it working, but with no 3d support.....we could really use your help dell on getting the 3d to work. new bios and drivers for the m17x r3 that support 680m fully would do the gaming commuinity wonders.thanks and i hope you reach out to us
