Alternatives to Microsoft based operating systems

Hi Dell,

My family and I like your computers because they are reliable and it is easy to buy just the features you want.  I am pleased to say that our family has owned about 8 Dell products.

However, I am tired of Windows/IE and all of the frustrating compatibility problems I encounter using their software.  I can only imagine it is going to get worse with the new Windows based touch screen technology that coming out.

I own a Studio XPS computer that is about 1 years old.  Since they seem to last about 3 years total, I predict I will need a new one in about 2 years.

I hope that Dell can come up with non-Windows optimized computer for sale.  I am sure I am not the only one tired of Windows and, surely, Dell has the ability to optimize computers for various operating systems.

Thank you for creating great hardware!

I will never again buy a new computer that has a part of the profits going to Microsoft.  I refuse to support their business model - and I wish that dell would allow us to choose 'NO OS' as an option when buying a machine - ACROSS THE BOARD.

Let us pick what we want - let the Android user have his way (and yes- you can run android - on top of windows or linux if you want - just not natively - yet) Let the Linux fans have their options (with whatever one of the countless builds are available) - but let us choose.  GET DELL OUT OF BED WITH MICROSOFT.

    -my opinion:
Microsoft is the dominant force in the world - and I have used or worked on their products since ms dos days...  I'm happiest with their windows 98 style menu system - hate vista - really dislike 7 and will NEVER use that dummied down looking windows 8 interface.  I wish the ribbon would be restricted to an 'opt in choice - classic by default - and that the decision makers who have forced this stuff down our throats would see the ERROR OF THEIR WAYS and allow us the CHOICE to use the standard / classic menu system - or their freaky dummied down -feature missing - click 10 times more - find hidden places to right click garbage...

I just priced a freedos machine with a comparable windows one:
    Optiplex 390 Desktop
    Intel® Core™ i3 2120 Processor (3.3GHz, 3M)
    16X DVD-ROM SATA, Data Only
    Integrated Video, Intel® HD Graphics 2000 (1HDMI & 1 VGA)
    250GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s and 8MB DataBurst Cache™
    2GB DDR3 Non-ECC SDRAM,1333MHz, (1 DIMM)
    Dell KB212-B USB 104 Quiet Key Keyboard,English
    Dell MS111 USB Optical Mouse
    Internal Dell Business Audio Speaker

    Windows
    $439.00
    FreeDos $623.00
FreeDos should be cheaper as there are no license fees.  It is this tactic that insults buyers.  This pricing scheme is designed to fail so that Dell can publicly say "we tried to sell non-windows hardware, but they didn't sell well".

sugarbear is correct, currently when looking at business desktops you can narrow the selection down to units with Free DOS/Linux Operating Systems.  You also may want to check out our current Storm Session for Project Sputnik where we are exploring creating a Developer laptop by pairing an XPS 13 with the Ubuntu linux Operating System.
