Where are the real customization?
change the OS and the security warranty is not customization!
what is that about "also included"?, we want to build our own PC!

Excellent news! I will be purchasing a laptop soon and this model is looking to be at the top of my list. The SSD is a great addition. I've read multiple great reviews of this machine. I struggle with reflective screens however, I would love an anti-glare option.Jul 17, 2012 Comment Link

Here is an update on the XPS 15 options. We have added a configuration with a 512GB SSD 16GB RAM and i7 QC. While this does not implement or even partially implement this idea I wanted to point it out since the XPS 15 and SSD were brought up. I have also found out that the mSATA can be changed from cache to being used as a seperate drive but is not recommended.Jul 15, 2012 Comment Link

Cy_J - I'd like the Dell Inspiron 17R line to be more configurable, so, for example, it could serve not just gamers but also power users looking for a powerful yet quiet general desktop replacement laptop. For example, the UK site offers 2 model ranges - the "new" 17R, and the "new" 17R SE. The differences between the model ranges make very little sense - the SE can have a full HD screen and the 650M video card and the plain 17R cannot. Both 17Rs have a crippled 100Mbit etherner network card (why???).
Why not simply "merge" the new 17R and 17R SE into a single model, allowing customers to select the processor, memory size, display size all the way up to full hd, and expand the range of video cards on offer (integrated HD4000, NVidia 630m/650m, AMD 7730m (like on 15R SE)/7760m (like on the new Vostro)). You can still offer, say, 5 base models (as opposed to 5 + 8 offered currently), and ask for a small fee to compensate for customizability.
And please, provide a BIOS option to switch to integrated/dedicated/hybrid video card mode. If Lenovo can do it, so can Dell (and as iit alread does on the Latitude line).

Thank you for the addition information AX-Turbo and Mizuki. I'm still waiting for an answer on danwdoo's question but I'm looking into it. This kind of feedback is helpful when building a case for change, keep the comments and votes coming.Jul 15, 2012 Comment Link

(Part 2 - pls read my below post first)17R SE - http://www.dell.com/de/p/inspiron-17r-se-7720/fs
Second config from the right (€999). Description says, "1TB-Serial ATA hard drive". In reality, this config comes with two 1 TB hard drives, but this is not evident for customers. The model from the far right (€1199), "750-GB-Serial ATA hard drive", in fact comes with two 750 GB hard drives + 32 GB mSATA SSD. At first glance, not apparent for the customer.
Inspiron 14z Ultrabook - http://www.dell.com/de/p/inspiron-14z-5423/fs
Description: "500-GB-SATA hard disc (5.400 U/min) with mSATA-Card" - this "card" in fact is a adequate 32 GB mSATA SSD-drive. But customers can´t read from this feature everywhere.
New Inspiron 17R/17R SE Graphic Cards
Description: "1 GB nVidia GeForce GT 630M" resp. "2 GB nVidia GeForce GT 650M" - no word that this is popular GDDR5 memory. Why? Customers are crazy on this mobile GDDR5 cards at the moment, why you don´t tell it to them with the simple addition "GDDR5"?
and so on, and so one. So much wasted sales potential, only cause the cusomers don´t know from such "invisible" top-features. Customers want to come, read, be immediately convinced and buy. They don't want to search in several sources/forums for several days for more product informations, only cause Dells informations are such wrong, incomplete or insufficient. At worlds top-5 computer manufacturers, Dell is still going downwardly, but partially this is also your own fault! I hope someone at Dells management think about this facts, impressions and opinions which are not only mine, but also these ones directly from the Dell customers front. Sorry for my rookie english.

just bring back the configuration options e.g from XPS 15 (L502x), at least the most important ones like CPU, RAM, optical drive, hard drive, maybe GPU. Or do you really believe every customer buys the costliest config only because he needs a Blu Ray drive instead of DVD?!?Another example: at notebookreview.com users asking for BD burner option for the new Inspiron SE line. This was denied from Bill-B. because of too less orders, too costly storing/service etc. Ok not everyone needs a BD burner, but generally: set realistic prices for your upgrades, and customers will order them. Not every user will pay +100€/~$120 for a Blu Ray combo drive, if he can get a adequate Blu Ray burner for €80/~$98 at aftermarket. Or +50€/~$60 for mingy +2 GB more memory, if 2x 4 GB costs €36/~$44 at aftermarket.
I wrote this already, but with such reduced config options, Dell gives up one of their most popular features which made Dell such unique in the past. Maybe Dell in the meantime is too big, cumbrouse and inflexible to offer this config options furthermore? New Inspirons pointing in this direction. But beware. Other aspiring manufactures will take there chances. One popular German example: Schenker/Mysn. In best Dell manner, you already can configure every little and big option for your new notebook there.
Next point: unpopular/missing features. At least in Europe, you scare of many potential 17R SE purchasers because they don´t accept the ridiculous 10/100 Mbit LAN of 17R SE for their Gigabit home networks. This missing Gigabit LAN which saves you $1,97583/unit (I guess ^^), is an absolutely no-go for them. Other potential buyers missing the popular mSATA option for 15R SE. Initially promoted everywhere, you get it now only in a few countries. Why not at least one ore two SE configs with this included mSATA drive everywhere?
Backlit Keyboard, people love it - but included for free in some countries, +40€ in european areas. Not at all available at the 48h express configs there. Customers wants their notebook fast but don't get the backlit keybord then. They can't understand this and are niggled about this. BTW, I don´t know who is responsible for the lousy German product detail descriptions, but this guy(s) make a really bad job! Examples? (see next post, too many characters for one single post?!)

If I had the possibility to choose the new XPS15 (l521x) with an 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM and no ODD (or at least no blueray) in Germany I would have already bought it. I have a Vostro 1500 right now. I loved that I could customize it how I want. I wish Dell would still offer customization :-(. I really miss it.Jul 12, 2012 Comment Link

Cy_J. Is the SSD then act as a separate drive or is it simply cache? If I can store critical components on it all the time, then that would go a long way in helping. The tests of the hybrid drives I have seen in the past have shown mediocre improvements on performance over traditional drives. Is this something different? I still would like the option to mix and match, and since these are all existing components that Dell already stocks, it should be a relatively minor thing to allow this.Jul 11, 2012 Comment Link

danwdoo - Looking at the top model for the new XPS 15 it comes with the 5400RPM 1TB drive you describe but it is combined with a 128GB mSATA SSD.Jul 11, 2012 Comment Link

Here is a perfect example. On the new XPS 15, if I chose the top model because I want the full 16GB Ram (which makes it obvious I am seeking performance here), I am saddled with a 5400 RPM drive! Sure it's 1TB, but 5400RPM, really? I'd much rather choose a smaller drive that is faster on a high end laptop such as this (though don't even get me started on the lack of an IPS screen and no SSD options! *sigh*).But then I can't max out the RAM. This is the kind of issues you run into when there isn't enough customization. It would not even require more parts. I just want to change the RAM and drive options between the two higher end choices.Previous 1 2 3 4 Next
