A 17' inch version of the new Dell XPS 15 l521x with better specifications!

Hello IdeaStorm

As of recently, the new Dell XPS 15 l1521x model was released together with XPS's new line of ultrabooks. The new design captured my interest immediately. Though the new XPS 15 does carry some mid-end/high-end specifications, I was slightly dissapointed, and therefore concluded that the price was very much in relation to the new very beautiful design.

What I would love to see now, is a new Dell XPS 17 sharing a similar very nice aluminium body. The new XPS 17 would have improved specifications due to the slightly bigger body, therefore making space for more hardware.

While the new Inspiron 17R SE does seem nice, it simply doesn't share the same premium feeling to it, as the new XPS series does!

Kind regards.

I am anxiously awaiting an XPS17 with at least the same specs as the top XPS15.  I use my laptop for civil engineering (earthwork, plant layout, structural design, and image/video rendering).  Many of my tools are CAD based.  All are very calculation intensive and use lots of data and memory (hence my need for the i7, 16 GB RAM, & SSD).  My CAD usage puts a premium on high resolution screens (17" FHD).  My age means I need the screen to be as large as practical.  I need a separate numeric keypad and having that integrated means one less accesory I need to carry.

I would prefer that screens were more square (not 16:9 ratio).  I don't watch movies on this laptop and most softwares are adopting the huge ribbon across the top (ala MS Office) which turns the usable screen into a thin strip along the bottom.

On my current Dell Laptop, I have some VBA routines that run inside our CAD software.  With four views open (views are different "windows" to see the same model) the VBA takes about four times longer to run than with only one window open.  I take that to mean my graphics system is slowing down my computer.  (or it might mean that the view redraw is single-threaded sequentially across all open views.)

Personally, I like the new XPS computers, but putting these features into the Inspiron 17 would be fine too if that were quicker.

I have been checking the Inspiron 17 almost on a daily basis.  The customization now boasts 1 hardware option (screen resolution).  At least that is up from zero options.  If I sound increasingly frantic, it is because I am starting to run up against the procurement window for this year.  If something doesn't happen soon I will have to take the XPS15 with the smaller screen and no keypad.  I don't relish squinting for the next two-three years, but I need the RAM and SSD.

Our company standard are the Latitudes.  Ordering a non-standard computer is hard enough, but it is impossible if it is in a totally different price range.  The Precisions are much higher priced.  The Inspiron/XPS lines with the hardware I need are only a little more than the standard Latitudes.

I just can't figure out why some combination of the XPS15 and the Alienware M17x components can't be configured into the Inspiron 17R / XPS17.

    Best regards,

Dave_S - Have you checked out the Inspiron 17R Special Edition and the new Precisions?  They may not be perfect matches for your needs but I wanted to let you know that there are options available.

I apologize for contradicting myself, saying that the nVidia Geforce GT640 is unable to run recent new games, and then later saying that it can, but in middle-presets. May i also correct that some might only be able to be played in the low-presets.

    Hi.

What bothers me the most is the graphics card; It is a mid-end but of course new gpu. Though it is new, it is only at the border of the high end cards, and is unable to run recent new heavy-tasked games. I'd love to the see the possibility of configuring some of the graphics card that you see in the Alienware line as well. Speaking of nVidia Geforce GTX660, 670, 675, 680 and the AMD Radeon HD 7950, 7970.

I understand that it might not be all that easy packing a high-end graphics card into such a slim laptop as the new XPS line, but it would definitely be the dot-above-the-i, if it was possible. Looking at the benchmarks of the current nVidia Geforce GT640, it can run many of the new games, but is only stable in the middle presets. I personally find it a bit lacking in comparison to the price and the other hardware that the new XPS has to offer. Take for instance the 512 SSD, it is amazing to see that available, and i see only a high-end graphics card doing it justice :)

As of activities that i would like to use the laptop for; design school work and gaming! And as you might be able to spot, i do prioritize the ability to game on my laptop quite a lot. The reason why i'm not simply buying a laptop meant for gaming, is that most of them aren't as appealing as the XPS! Most of them are unfortunately bulky and heavy to carry around..

Ripemango: Can you share more specifics on which specifications you’d like to see improved, and what activities you do that would benefit from the new specifications? It helps the product planning teams when they received detailed anecdotal details. Thanks

    A slight correction in the title;

"A 17' inch version of the new Dell XPS 15 l521x with better specifications!"
