Dell PDA transformed into the Star Trek Tricorder complete with built in sensors.

Radar, Sonar, Barometer, Microscope, Binoculars, Sonic Flashlight (mobile sonogram) FLIR (forward looking infrared radar), AM/FM Radio, Television, Geology Spectrum Analyzer, Flashlight, Night Vision Starlight Scope, Electromagnetic Spectrum Analyzer, Chemical Composition Analyzer, Wind meter, Thermometer, Altimeter, audio recorder, video recorder, short range CB 2 way radio, cell phone and satellite phone. No field scientist equipment list would ever be complete without this.

There is some precedence for this with this solar powered Casio watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Thermometer, Digital Compass, sunrise and sunset data. http://www.casio.com/products/Watches/PRO_TREK/PAG240B-2/

Arm computers are a primary resource in modern games like Fallout with the pipboy 3000 see this video for the start of a real world working pibboy 3000 arm computer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tCEXEuICWs

Expandability. The great thing about the Dell PDAs is they had multiple ports for various memory cards, which were also used for expansion slots to GPS cards, FM radio, Encyclopedia Britannica SD card.

Expectations. Our youth are starting to expect a different future than we grew up with. They expect more portable computing tools and communications waterproofed to take anywhere so they can always be connected. The screen also has to be large 5 inch for increased readability. This is why an arm computer is a better option than a wrist pda http://wristpda.beiks.com/

    Multi sensor array armband

A future scientist or engineer in the field will need many sensors. Here is a link to a site which has many electronic sensors. Example: Whisker sensors, Temperature and Humidity, Infra-Red, Magnetic, Photosensor, Color, Altimeter and more.
    http://www.hobbyengineering.com/cgi/search.cgi?query=sensor&btnSubmit=Search

With a full arm band/case we can many sensors which would not fit into a Smart phone/PDA. There are some young gaming and gadget people on youtube putting existing Smart phones into the Pipboy armband. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T4iCVPVO9U&feature=related
However we want to go beyond this existing capability by using all the additional space in the armband for sensors, radios etc.

The nice thing is that these senors already exist. The trick is to put them all into an armband link them to a PDA/smart phone and protect them from rain/water, dirt/sand, sweat, heat and cold. Scuba diver computer watches already exist that provide, information on depth, navigation and heart rate. http://www.diveprodivegear.com/m8/450203--scubapro-galileo-luna-hoseless-dive-computer.html

Ham two way radio is more popular now and longer range. However it requires a ham radio license. The citizen band radio idea was to avoid the license requirement. Also some CB radios now come with an extra emergency weather channel which is a long range broadcast for most areas in the USA. This is a constant broadcast of weather conditions in your area with emergency broadcasts which take over when necessary. An engineering or scientific crew out in a remote area away from the network would benefit from a short range two way radio and weather updates. The CB radio can receive long range broadcasts, even though the transmission range is very short.

Currently they use Motorola hand held radios. They could use the satellite phone. However at about $1 (one dollar) per minute it gets expensive when out in the field for a week. Technically the range of a handheld CB radio can vary from about 1/4 mile to 5 miles depending on if you have line of sight transmission and the antenna. Built in is very short range 1/4 mile, attachable 3 to 4 inch antenna 1 mile, long whip antenna 3 to 5 feet connect through a coax cable has about a 5 plus mile range.

You forgot the duct tape holder.  CB radio hasn't been popular in 40 years, and you mentioned it twice in your two products.
