I'm using M4500 with Kubuntu (KDE version of Ubuntu). I'm mostly satisfied with this machine. But I'll replace this machine with Sputnik if it's a machine like below.
- Stereo mini jack on left side. M4500 has a jack on left side, but it's less useful because a head phone has a cable on left side.
- No CD/DVD/Blue-Ray. I rarely use it. It simply increases weights.
- No additional GPUs. M4500 has nVidia one, which consumes power a lot.
- High resolution, at least 1600x900, is must. (Bigger screen is welcome)
- Cool keyboards. M4500 is too hot.
- RAM: more is better. At least 16GB.
- CPU: faster is better. Need quad cores.
- Disk: SSD is must. I'm using 512GB model.
- Device driver support. M4500 has several unusable devices on Linux, such as Richo card reader.
- No pointing stick. Touch pad is just fine.
- Ubuntu logo instead of Windows.

My thoughts on your points:- xps13 already has stereo headphone jack on the left side of the keyboard
- no optical media reader
- it has a dedicated Intel 3000 GPU
- slightly higher res might be nice, but not at the cost of a larger chassis
- heat shouldn't be a problem if the fan isn't impeded on the bottom
- I give you a +1 on "more RAM"; even 8GB would be nice
- having two-core HT cpus is probably sufficient for most; a true quad-core will eat heavily into battery life
- xps13 ships with ssd, though the current specs are 128GB or 256GB
- as far as device driver support goes, that's one of the main goals of Sputnik, to have full driver support for all hardware in the machine out of the box.
- xps13 has a touchpad... did you even read the specs on the xps13? ;o)
- ubuntu logo on the keyboard in place of the windows flag on the meta key: I would pay extra money for that. System76 does this on their Ubuntu-powered laptops and it's SUCH a nice subtle improvement.
