I believe that it would be a worthwhile additiong to add the 640M as a option for the XPS 14, even if it only had 1gb of gddr5. It is my belief that this additon would further increase the performance, quality and appeal of the product.

OK, I see where you are coming from now.  Do you do photo or video editing as well?

    re: Cy-J

My personals uses are games (im more torwards the casual than "gamer" but i enjoy good graphics), watching videos.
Im a student so not much Computer design for me.
In terms of gamming i dont have annything really new (09' newest), but i would like a capable next gen gpu (ie kepler which is in the 640,50,60,80) rather than a rebrand or a simple die shrink. I would call this a bit of  mild future proofing.

In addtion comparable laptops such as the Acer M5 and Sony Vaio S14 which i am also looking at have 256gb ssd and at the moment better gpu's. (640M and 640M LE, both of which are better than 630M). Thus if the XPS is ever offered in 256 gb SDD and has the 640M it would DEMOLISH the competition and be a sure buy for me.

Ps if such a comfiguration comes around plz make sure its available in CANADA too, not just Stateside.

Thanks for the additional feedback.  I was asking about your uses as it helps me explain the idea better if it reaches the popularity level to push the idea to the Idea Partners.  As for pricing, elimiating the 630 in favor of the 640 may offset some of the cost but I'm not sure if it would eliminate the difference.

I suggest also at least GT640M level graphics, othervise I just buy an AMD Trinity laptop which balanced with good CPU and GPU performance in 35W.

    StigtriX:
    660M or 680M
would be awesome, but I'm afraid a 14" laptop should be at least 3inch thick and very haevy to cool it down.

oh and to respond to cy-j question on price, i think that if dell eliminated the 630 as an option for the XPS 14 and 15 and went only with the 640, wouldn't it reduce the cost of stocking the part as dell would be able to buy it in bulk?

as for the 660 and 680, isnt that overkill for a 14 inch laptop of the thickness of a xps 14?

I'm just saying that a 640M would be a nice and worthwhile additon that would enable the XPS 14 to become the most "ultra" ultrabook!

I agree wholeheartedly with boba1b23. If DELL thinks that only gamers care about GPU performance, they are very wrong.
Every review of the new XPS series mentions wishes for more powerful GPUs. Video editing, image editing, rendering, serious multitasking etc. need GPU power. To be honest, DELL should just offer high-end GPUs with new XPS models.

With the current mobile GPUs, I would suggest the following:
    - nVIDIA GTX 660M 2GB DDR5 as an alternative
    - nVIDIA GTX 680M 4GB DDR5 as an alternative

If you offer 660M and 680M, you will get extremely positive response from the market. I can guarantee it! Just look at the sales Razer had with their Razer Blade laptop - sold out and it's still hard to get! Make a PC that can devour any task, any game - ANYTHING! Mass produce it to keep costs down and have few choices.

    Here are my suggestions:
HDD: 256GB SSD or 512GB SSD
    CPU: i5 or i7
    GPU: 660M or 680M

"Wait! 660M and 680M are too powerful, you won't need them!", you may think. Modern games can't be run at 1920x1080 with all settings on max on a 660M, but can handle most mainstream games atleast on medium settings and 1920x1080. The 680M is powerful enough for any game with everything on max at 1920x1080. What we must consider, though, is that the new laptops coming out soon will have screens with higher resolution. They demand more GPU power. If you cheap out on GPUs, you will see a declining user base as Apple and other brands have already embraced the trend and have produced or are working on products with higher resolution than 1080p.

in addition I feel that a option with a 256gb SSD only option would do very well.

Also interms of the gpu here is a quote from Vincent Chang of Cnet Asia:
"But it just doesn't feel that Dell went far enough--this should have been at least an Nvidia GeForce GT 640M if Dell had wanted to make a case for its graphics performance."

Iwas refering to 1GB rather than 2 GB as to differentiate the performance of the XPS 15 and my concept of the 14.

To respond to Cy-J,  it is not necessarily what im doing but rather what i believe would improve Dell's line up. Other lesser quality laptops of the 14inch variety that are designated "ultrabooks" has this piece of hardware and it is rather bizarre that The vaunted XPS line has inferior hardware that is just a die shrink from the previous generation (ie the 630M) while a cheaper manufacturer offer superior hardware (in terms of the gpu). I feel that this let down also deminishs the quality of the product, which otherwise is a marvel worthy of distinction.

Also to a lesser extent, i also wanted a card on a 14 inch laptop that would rival the power on my old and dearly departed desktop...

Yes, GT 640M would be a nice improvement that should be listed as a choice. Don't scoff at 1GB of GDDR 5 though. 1GB of GDDR 5 surpases 2GB of GDDR3 in performance.
