Stick with one naming scheme for laptops

Having used Dell laptops for a few years (and having lots of friends who use dells). They all seem to follow one basic idea when it comes to naming the different models
->Inspiron    = Buget Laptops
->XPS           = Performance Laptops
->Alienware = Extreme performance for gaming

But recently dell india has gotten rid of the entire XPS 15 & 17 line of laptops and decided to name the performance category of laptops Inspiron 15R & 17R (http://www.dell.com/in/p/inspiron-17r-se-7720/pd.aspx?c=in&cs=indhs1&l=en&s=dhs). A laptop costing INR 95000 ( 1800 $) is definitely not a budget laptop.

For lot of Dell users Inspiron always meant budget laptops and XPS always meant Performance laptops.

In practical terms, this took me a lot longer to find my new laptop since I opened the XPS (which only features ultrabooks now) tab by default in your website and found nothing there met my needs. I resisted opening the inspiron tab initially because of my eariler stated prejudice. An inspiron always made me picture a INR 30000 (550 $) laptop.

    Thank you for clarifying Autobot.  My reference to the US site was not due to a misunderstanding but rather to call out that the XPS 15 is still available in the US.  I am not sure about plans to bring it to India.  I could have been clearer in my comments, sorry about that.

    Since you do like some of the other comments I would like to point out a function available to you since you are the author of this idea.  If you like a comment posted to your idea you have the option to promote it to an "Idea Extension" where it will be considered a part of your idea.  The function moves the comment to a section above the comments specifically for idea extensions as well.

    I might as well point out that you also have the option to edit your profile to add additional information about yourself, links to your profile for social media sites and an avatar.  I see you already added some topics of interest.  An avatar helps make your ideas and comments stand out and build recognition in the community like pudgyone below.  A Bio along with the topics of interest gives Dell and other users more insight into you and how you might be using your system.  The social media links are more for you to be able to network with other site members who share the same interests.

    I was firstly talking about the dell india website, not US.

    I finally settled for an Inspiron 15R Special Edition costing around INR 68000 ( around 1200 - 1300 US Dollars )
    Laptops in this Price/Performance Category were previously called XPS here in India.

    It just took a lot longer to find this laptop. Previously laptops costing over INR 50000 were all XPS laptops. So I opened the XPS tab on your website and went through the entire XPS catalogue before I zeroed in on this one.

    Some of the other comments on this thread also look like good ideas.

    Why not use a convention like:

    XPD - denotes desktop
    XPN - denotes notebook

    or XPS-D and XPS-N?

    Dimensions used to be Desktops

    Inspirons used to be Laptops

    Latitudes were Business Laptops

    The should have kept them listed that way. Now when someone says I have a Dimension, without the model number, you don't know if it is a desktop or laptop

    In the US we have the Inspiron R as well as the XPS 14 and 15 which were recently announced.  What exactly were you looking for?
