Over the past fiver years, laptop screen bezels have increased in size from only about a quarter of an inch to around an inch now.  All this wasted bezel space could have been used to make a bigger screen.  I can probably put a 15" screen in a 14.1" laptop chasis.  And even probably a 17" screen in a 15.6" laptop chasis.  Reduce the screen bezel size, a large bezel is a backward step in technology.

Just compare the C840 (really old laptop):

I'm sorry but the latest Latitude series has the largest and ugliest screen bezel ever.  Shrink the bezel size please.  Look at the latest of what Acer is planning to use: http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/25/acer-said-to-be-using-lg-shuriken-display-in-upcoming-laptop/ They will be using a LG Shurikan display to reduce bezel down to only 8mm as well as thickness down to 4mm.  Follow suit Dell.  I want to see laptops with smaller screen bezel.

Thank you for the idea submission. Pictured is a Latitude notebook, where we have not been emphasizing thinner bezels. However, on the consumer side, we have the XPS 14z with an edge to edge screen (nearly, not literally), and you may have seen the XPS 13 debuted by our own Jeff Clarke on stage at the Intel keynote. It has a thin bezel on Gorilla Glass.

So, speaking for the consumer side of the house (Cynthia is on the business client side), I'd say we heard you loud and clear, and stay tuned to our brothers and sisters in arms' offerings in the coming months. They might have some thinner bezels, too.

i was wondering if dell made the bezel that size for the 15" version to accomodate the numeric keypad. Or maybe they found out the numeric keypad fits because the bezel is so thick! haha. either way take the numeric keypad out! and make bezel thinner. looks so ugly. i feel like im carrying a 1998 laptop. floppy disk anyone?

It's partly due to the wiring to the webcam/mic and antennae for wifi. Dell Latitude/Precisions tend to have better reception than the HP Elitebook, Lenovo X/T/W and Apple MBP (the latter being the worst of the bunch, from my experience, of course mileage can vary).

strange that almost all computer companies are starting to use larger bezels.  I wonder if it is cheaper or something, but it definitely looks ugly.
