Thanks for the update here, in your profile and with the new idea. We can move the discussion about your needs there. :)Sep 18, 2012 Comment Link

I think you can see this in 3 ways:1. New computers need less energy at the same performance level.
2. New computers need the same amout of energy, but are more performant.
3. A bit of both.
The problem is... I'm happy with my 4-5 hours on battery while working.
So more performance is the only reason for me to upgrade ;)
And if you build a new computer with 3 battery cells less, but the same run-time, then the performance compared to a 2-3 year old computer won't be that much better to justify an upgrade.
As for size an weight: I'm totally happy with my L501x in this regard.
For me performance, run-time, noise and screen matter the most.
I don't care about size, as long as it fits into my backpack :)
About my profile and opening a new idea: Thanks, I'll do this later :)

BeLan - Thank you for sharing. My personal opinion on the battery size issue: I think that as computers become more energy effecient you will see less need for the 9 cell battery as the 6 cell would fill your needs while shaving size and weight from the system. I am open to debate on my opinion. :)
As for your requirements for you needs a year from now, I think posting them as an idea would be great. I think you could gather some votes from the community and a good conversation on the path for Inspirons to take in the future. I would also suggest updating your profile to add at least an avatar and a bio or interests. The avatar makes your posts stand out while giving a hint of your personality and the Bio helps others and us at Dell learn more about how you may be using your systems.

The only reason why I have a Dell notebook at the moment (L501x) is, because I could select the parts I wanted. It knew, that I have to wait a few weeks to get it, but I thought it was worth it.
Also I wouldn't have cared, if it were 100€ more expensive.
But now without the customization, I can't find a configuration that fits my needs.
This really <ERROR: Comment submitted contains the following restricted words. ....> :(
The Inspiron 15R SE lacks a 9 cell battery and has only 100Mbit LAN.
The new XPS 15 costs 2 times more than the Inspiron with almost identical configuration (I don't care if it is a bit more expensive, but 1000€ is to much!) and I don't like the keyboard layout.
The Alienwares have no 15" model and don't fit in a serious meeting with customers (+ at least the old ones had bad build quallity).
I think I will stay with my L501x for the next year, but if you won't come up with something like the L501x/L502x with updated hardware (+ maybe a mSATA, so I won't have to swap my ODD for a SSD again), then you lost me as a customer.
And no, I don't see the Inspiron 15R SE as a successor of the L502x, as it has no 9-cell battery option, only 100Mbit LAN and is not customizeable at all.

If you read Bill's statement again you will see that he is referring to Full Customization. There are still different levels to chose from and some models offer more choices than others.Aug 25, 2012 Comment Link

This idea speaks to our past business model of basically 100% optional configurability as I read it. We tried to maintain build-to-order (BTO) as long as it was feasible. Unfortunately for those expecting or wanting full configurability, market and overall customer experience factors have dictated our move to fixed configurations. This provides advantages over the BTO model like, but not limited to, quicker product delivery, less confusing choices for customers, and a speedier order decision process. In the fixed configuration model, we are able to deliver system orders significantly faster from the time the order is placed than we would if we were custom building every order. We also gain operating efficiencies which allow us to be competitive on price. We take into consideration individual regional market preferences and offer fixed configs and multiple price points and component options. For at least the near term, Dell has no plans to return to a full BTO model.

I agree completely with this suggestion. The online customizability is one of the main reasons thhat I love DELL. Now you can't really customize it unless it's an Alienware. (Also, I'd especially like to see more customizability on those cool little Inspiron 660s's. If I could select a good CPU and GPU, I'd probably get one.)Jul 26, 2012 Comment Link

If anti glare is important to you, there is also the new Precision mobile workstations that were just released. It all depends on what your budget is.1 2 3 4 Next
