Merged IdeaI am constantly being sent Dell Vostro advertisements up here in Canada because I own a small business. The reason why Vostro notebooks and desktops are so inexpensive is because they contain 'what you need and nothing more'. This means their hardware contains older Celeron technology or lower-grade Core 2 Duo processors. Most have integrated sound and video cards and 160 - 320 GB hard drives. This helps keep the cost down, correct? As for the operating system, all of them have the choice between Windows XP Home/Professional and Windows Vista HomeBasic/Business. This keeps the cost down in the sense that these Windows licenses aren't of 'premium' grade. You know what else would bring the price down? If you gave the consumer a choice to install Ubuntu by default. You'd be surprised how many business owners would take this option. If you're advertising to small businesses, most of them do not need highly specialized equipment or software and thus only need web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging, CD burning and maybe accounting and image editing. All of these can be found in Ubuntu, most (except the accounting software) are pre-installed. For accounting, GnuCash can be installed. I would personally purchase one of these computers if they had Ubuntu pre-installed because I don't want to purchase a Windows license if I'm not going to use it. For now, I'll purchase the EeePC while I'm on the road. Don't overlook how Linux is overtaking the low-end computer sector. Low-end doesn't mean low-class.

I have a Inspiron 9400, and guess wich computer is in my wish list. Dell Admin should understand that not only students are using ubuntu. I have these Dell Inspiron 9400 for more that 2 year under a 3 year warranty, I am preparing to install ubutnu on it. and also plan to keep it and purchase the vostro 1700 in the next 9 months. I am ready to migrate to ubuntu 8 and keep windows xp. A Search in google: ubuntu on dell inspiron 9400.tell me that the Inspiron 9400 has done a good job runing ubuntu. Is not a matter of, if Dell Admins at these forum like the idea or not. Is a fact that bussiness customers decide wich is better for them. I dont like my hardware depreciates by poor bad new technology from microsoft Vista. I love Windows xp I have a lot of programs invested on It., So my best choice here is Ubuntu as my main OS and virtualbox.org to run windows xp, inside ubuntu. I will get all the compability I need with these combination. I see that microsoft does not care in the investment of hardware. My Inspiron 9400 run flawesly office 2003, and I upgraded to office 2007 to see the performance of my Inspiron 9400 go down. I am a very satisfied Dell customer and always recomend Dell, In the company of my fiance they got 2 new dell desktop, guess who recomended dell? But when Dell Admins start telling us what we should do, then why having these forum at all? Another thing to dell admins here at these forum. Aplications are running more and more OS independant. Like CRM salesforce.com and sugarcrm.com Open Source is really meaning more and more money to companies, and customers. So I am really very upset about these post to be set up to: Not Now, Bussines Customers want a secure operating system, why pay for microsoft mistakes releasing a late, expensive and slow OS, that really does not deliver what was promised. I feel that If I follow the Vista Path. I will be trowing away part of my hardware investment about 20% the total of the Vostro 1700 that is $300 of a $1500.00 system I plan to purchase, all these becaue of of the MS vista OS. So I keep the good Windows XP, and get a really great operaing system for $0.00 and help Open source community demostrate that Open Source really means money, and benefits to bussiness customers.
