Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
DELL/ Status Update
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

optical is so 1990s... a USB stick with all necesary drivers (especially the wireless card drivers) and standard documentation is more acceptable.  Also elimintate the tree killing phamplets.  Just the mandatory stickers and perhaps a cool looking USB 2 (for compatibility) stick in a "special" looking window in the dell box.
Packaging can be labeled - "Start Here" or something a bot catchier.  - SW should be self installing.

The status of this should be changed. This idea is clearly not implemented see image below.
    XPS 8300

Some systems don't even have the option to get recovery media. Definately falling back.

I made an idea about Dell providing .iso files to download it is related and fixes the "environmental concerns" but they don't even offer this.

Changed status to **IMPLEMENTED**. @winoffice: You are correct. Like bill_b said, customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media. Thanks for the idea!

@bill_b: What then is the status of the idea? Since you claim that the reinstallation discs are now included, I doubt that the **UNDER REVIEW** tag is valid for this idea anymore.

So we can eliminate a whole process by ignoring it in our ideas? Why hasn't anyone told us we can do that! I'd of voted up all the other anti-Green ideas if I knew we could override them by not mentioning any side effects or society issues! I should reword my ideas now.

@jmxz: When we made the discs optional, the default setting was "not included." This lead to a great deal of calls requesting the media be sent. Unfortunately, the shipping burns gas. Having the same option but making the default to include it, will defeat the purpose of having too many discs shipped unnecessarily. If the idea is to make a popup with environmental concerns called out, and clearly explaining the option and consequences, that's a different idea than the one posed here.

My idea on not sending the disk and using a web-netboot would solve your green issue jmxz, too bad Dell continues to ignore it.

@bill_b: "Reinstallation media .... is included in the box" And you're not ashamed of the environmental waste? Or is the "Green" marketing campaign over now that dell marketing switched to the "simplify it" one. It still seems making them optional would have been better. Can you make _not_ getting the disks optional? Many people (those with Vista Retail and Linux distros that you don't bundle) don't even want the OS's you include.
