Okay I'll try and deal with the easy stuff first.

Things to archive:

1) All implemented ideas.
2) All partially implemented ideas.
3) All rejected ideas.

These three categories are important because we need a record of what IdeaStorm has acheived so far and the ideas Dell for one reason or another felt it could not commit to.

4) Certain idea trends need to be recognised. These ideas can then all be merged and archoved together or one idea that is representative of the trend can be archived as a "place holder". An example would be international shipping. It's fairly common for people to ask for products that are available in the US or UK, but not Brazil or Portugal etc.

5) Some genuinely unique ideas that show some real imagination. I realise that might involve a bit of digging. But it would be good to show people the sort of thing Dell expects to see from IdeaStorm. And I get the impression Dell was hopping for somthing more than just "I want x,y,z spec laptop" ideas that have become so common.

6) You might also want to break out a special section for complaints. I don't think IdeaStorm was really intended for complaints handling. But users don't always do what you expect and more than a few have used IdeaStorm in this way. This will keep complaints away from the mainstream ideas and allow Dell to deal with them more efficiently. And possibly resolve one or two issues along the way.

The search function, duplicate suggestions and merging system are being revamped for the 2.0 project.  Aikiwolfie does have a point that some people will post duplicates no matter how good the system is at suggesting ideas.  Hopefully with the improved functions we will be able to avoid some of the duplicate posts and merge the rest.

We need to have a regular archiving schedule to maintain the site.

The problem with duplications is in the software. When you create an idea the software looks for duplcate titles. Every time I post an idea, the four to six ideas that are displayed never have any thing to do with the new title that I am posting.

Regular archiving is part and parcle of forum maintenance. So basically yes. However given your determined to have an uncluttered appearance in the forum Dell should perhaps take a different tact with IdeaStorm.

Right now it's basically a free for all. It's an open forum. Which doesn't seem to be what Dell wants. I think perhaps you guys need to be focusing on the storm sessions.

So basically ideas should be available for people to read, vote and comment on while a storm session is live. But then otherwise made read only when the storm session ends.

Ideas can then only be submitted when a storm session is running. Which does of course mean you'd have to really work at promoting the storm sessions before they go live. Which is where you could really leverage social media.

expatinasia - Is your question directed to the idea or me?

aikiwolfie - I understand that duplicates will still occur but hopefully they will be much easier to manage after the archiving and update.

Do you think we should have a regular archiving schedule after the initial sweep in order to keep the site uncluttered?

I mod a forum where duplicates are a massive issue. Even after I create FAQs which are always visible, people still posted duplicate threads. You will never get rid of duplicates. Nobody posting on IdeaStorm is going to take the time to search for their idea. They'll come on the site, register, post and maybe vote for a few things before the novelty wears off.

So, your plan is to archieve everything?  With all of the multiple posts for identical ideas, it's not obvious that people are searching anything to ascertain whether their ideas are unique.

Good point.  We understand that and it is why we are looking to clean up the site.  We are also working on changes that will come out in future Storm Sessions.  Hopefully the improved search functions combined with less visable ideas will help in avoiding duplicates.  If it doesn't, it will at least be easier for me to find the correct ideas to merge them into.  :)

There are so many "ideas" to wade through to determine if an idea is New, before posting, that hardly anyone bothers. It's just simplier to just post whatever pops into your mind than it is to worry about duplicating old ideas. So whether an idea remains visible or not is not all that important to the majority of "drive by" posters. (Which makes up the bulk of current participants.) And even less to the casual reader. So whatever you decide to remove or "archive" could be a lot less important than you may think.

Aikiwolfie - I believe we are thinking along the same lines.  We are not deleting anything and will keep it where it can still be accessed by Dell but it will be hidden from the site.  The archived ideas will not be automatically returned to the site on a future date but we will have the option to bring back individual ideas if needed.  After reading your comments it seems like you are suggesting archiving all ideas reguardless of age or vote value and starting with a clean slate.  One of my concerns with that is the loss of recently posted ideas that have not had a chance to gain traction.  Another concern would be the lack of visability for ideas that have been marked Implemented, Partially Implemented, Under Review or Not Planned.

That being said, other than the idea tags I mentioned is there anything else that should be left viewable by everyone on the site?  If so what criteria would those ideas need to meet?
