I hope you will excuse my grammar, english is not my main language.
You probably have heard about this many times but since I haven't see any change I would submit my "idea".
Have someone consider why people is buying more and more Apple computers? (including me, at home we use Apple only...). If you are going to tell me how easy to use they are, or the music history I believe you are missing the picture. It would be much easier for me to use a PC since I've been working with PC's my entire life. It is true those are easy machines to use but I guess the main point is the "perception" and also something you "pros" would find very stupid or funny, the design...
Just check all the interior desgn magazines you want and tell me how many pc's you see and how many macs... We perceive Apple as an innovative company that takes great pride not only in their OS but also on the appearance of their machines. On the contrary, I have to say Dell computers (that I love, my office is all Dell, clients and servers, because I choose to) haven't change at all... Still the same boring "black boxes"... (sorry, you have added color to your laptops....). Just put your best performing machine side by side with a mac and ask your friends (before using it, just by the looks....) what is more appealing to them...
"Perception is 100% of reality", and Apple did a great job on that department... (Design is the USA, Made in China??????????).

I really don't enjoy people who post an "idea" and then don't follow up. Absence of their input implies it isn't really important to them. Why should we consider anything different?Rpalop, let your kids play with the Mac and lets press on with those who want to make a difference. Don't post here unless you are willing to follow up with your ideas or supporting arguments.

Some of my opinions on Dell design:1. Get more consistent across the line. I mean, Alienwares should look different, but the XPS's, Latitudes, Vostro and Inspirons should start to look a bit more consistent. I'd say out of the four, currently Vostros are the best looking laptops, along with the older E6x10 generation Latitudes. Dell used to have reasonably consistent design but that has changed.
2. Emphasize function. Apple prides itself on form over function. Dell should try to do the reverse - put function first, but without sacrificing form. Laptops should be durable and comfortable to use first, and pretty next.
3. Make design original. Don't blatantly ripoff other manufacturers' designs (*cough* XPS 15z *cough*). Dell has been fairly good in the past and has some very original great designs. The new Vostro V131 looks great. Don't copy Apple's design elements please. Keep Dell original.
4. Don't replace good designs so fast. IMO there's some great looking laptops Dell has made whose designs should've lasted longer. Notably, the XPS M1330/M1530 and the Latitude E6400/E6410 are still great looking laptops today despite their age. Their replacements arguably looked a lot worse (just search various forums for the outcry agains the Latitude E6x20 generation - the majority consider them much uglier than the E6x10, e.g. http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-latitude-vostro-precision/606390-new-latitude-series-current-models-just-dont-cut.html ).

Rpalop,
I'm glad to hear/read that your kids are at least somewhat computer literate and in the young stages of education anything, Mac or PC is great. However, there are a few things I have grown to know over the years and its:
1) Mac's are great in elementry schools (because of the ease of use)
2) Mac's perform well and have hundreds of apps for publishing (industries such as printing newspapers and the such are well known for having mac machines/users in their companies)
But other then publishing, how many mac's do you see in the corporate world? (Yes, I agree we're seeing more and more IPads but they haven't been around long enough to gain stats)
What happens when kids go from elementry to Jr High/High School? Well, for the most part, they have to use a PC to do their work.
Why? -- Because its industry standard. I'm just being realistic... unless your company is into publishing or you have a rock solid Mac IT staff, or hey lets jump off the deep end and say the Board of Directors said everyone must use a Mac, most companies will use and continue to use PCs regardless of design.
Now, don't get me wrong, this could all change, but if your putting all your chips down on image, color, appearance of what a computer should be, and expect the skills of a comsumer to change just becuase of its appearance, I personally disagree with your conclusions. And my personal opinion, I don't want every mac gadget I own to be white or silver.
For sake of agrument, I suppose we could discuss Apple's naming conventions? I think their names are very plain. Imac, Ibook, IPod, IShuffle, IPad.. (Heard they may need a ICEO now..sry just trying to lighten the topic a bit) With Dell you have Precision, Inspiron, Latitude and Vostro.
If we went by name, I guarantee you I would pick Precision over MacPro.
(Back to Topic) I know many people that are on still on a Dell "black box" using a Intel Celeron from years ago and the life cycle out performed the local elementry teacher's mac book. Thats why I try (yes, said try..) to stay out of arguments about what is better.. Mac or PC; Novell or Microsoft; Intel or AMD;
In the end, the computer of any make/model will only be as good as the user behind it.
But since you asked - If I put my Alienware 17x next to a MacBook, I personally would choose my 17x. (You did say, "your best performing machines")
Hummm... Alienware vs. MacBookPro.. yip, I'm sold on the name too. ;)

Thanks for the clarification rpalop. Do you feel it is an exterior design issue or an overall PR issue? What I mean by that is, do your children gravitate towards Apple simply because of the looks or the overall perception of Apple as a brand?Sep 8, 2011 Comment Link

It is not really a problem of mine, I will still use my Dell computers at work and keep buying Dell. To me, by far, the best ones out there. But here is what happened in my home, maybe it helps you understand...A couple years ago, "Santa" left my kids what I thought it was a great present: a Dell Laptop for each one (Cristina 12 and Nico 9 years old). They have never used those!!!!! instead, my son have my first Mac and my daughter the second... Why do they, at such an early age, perceive more value on mac? why are those machines "cool" and not a very well made dell laptop with the same or more power? They came back with iTunes and started recapturing the market with it, now is the iPad, but still they do so good with the kids I do not understand... or maybe I do... Aren't you missing something? Should you pay a little bit more attention in your exterior design than in the inside? do you think my son would tell the difference between a dual core 5 or a 7????? The impressions they grow with will stay with them forever, the dual core will be obsolete in 6 months... Open for further discussion.

yes, all are made in China but no computer manufacturer other than Apple has put an effort in the word design... Designed in the US, made, like everybody else, in China. No problem with that.Sep 8, 2011 Comment Link

Thanks for the feedback rpalop. What would you reccommend Dell do in order to rectify the problem you present?
