Alienware earned its name by creating fancy cases that made gamers weak in the knees, they offered bleeding edge tech to stuff into those cases. The cases finally got a remodel and they look great. Unfortunately under the hood they are just Dell computers that are wired neatly. If you want your dream machine to have 3 video cards, 6 hard drives, a sound card and a gamer LAN card you can Asus and several other companies have been making mother boards that can do all that for a few years now. Alienware computers use motherboards that only have 2 PCIe slots and can only handle 4 hard drives, so you can have a video card and sound card or a video card and a Gamer LAN card or 2 video cards. I needed to upgrade my Alienware SLI system (it was 3 years old) I looked at buying another Alienware computer, but they just weren't offering anything that could do what I wanted. I had to go down to my local computer store, buy a 2 year old motherboard that fit perfectly in my alienware case, but is far more upgradeable & powerful then anything Alienware is offering. PLEASE DELL GIVE ALIENWARE IT'S SOUL BACK. oh and what is with the mice and keyboards offered with "top of the line" gamer machines, why the alienware branded items and no high end industry leading stuff? I want to recommend Alienware to my friends who want to replace there aging systems, please look into building high end machines with things that are useful Microsoft does not make a PC operating system that can use 12 gigs of RAM

The current look of Alienware products are designed to appeal to more customers. Dell isn't a boutique brand in the business to cater to a small niche market like Alienware originally did. Their selling in mass quantities. Some of the extreme trademarks are no longer around for this reason.I think they could look a lot worse. Have you seen the Toshiba Qosmio?

I do partly agree with the position many people have in this area. Primarily when I look at motherboards, I choose EVGA with its impressive range, because of how many video cards, hard drives and how much memory they can handle, which has been extended to the 64GB limit on at least one product.Hyncharas
I'm a 3d artist, so I expect a sstem that's going to cost a reasonable price I can upscale over time, not something that's £10,000 out-of-the-box just to get work done.

Alienware is still ok, but has the potential to be great as noted above. I personally do not like the lack luster case they come in now. I loved the skullcap! It was edgy and really caught your eye. When people saw the computer they could tell that it was one mean machine before even opening it. Dell/ Alienware needs to bring back the skullcap or something just as cool. They need to at least offer an option/ upgrade on cases and another thing is an upgrade on speakers either bose or beats by dre speakers. Dell has definitely taken the heart and soul out of what was once the coolest, most innovative and edgy computers to ever land on the planet earth. ALIENWARE USED TO BE A 10.0, IT'S NOW ABOUT A 6. COME ON DELL!!!!!!!!!Jan 20, 2011 Comment Link

IDD with everything said here.Alienware stands for "THE STANDARD" other pc's/ laptops aspire to be...
BUT...
Under Dell's current running of the Alienware department it has indeed right now lost it's soul & IMHO lost it's good customer service too.
If you spend thousands of pounds on your pc then the customer service (when something's gone wrong) should be top notch & you definately shouldn't send out 1 of your average dell technicians to work on a £2,000+ laptop, send out your best guy's who know what their doing as some of your engineers would be lucky to get a job at pc world installing an anti virus programme on an acer laptop never mind be trusted with a £2,000+ laptop for gods sake...
Dell if you continue down this current road that your going with "THE ALIENWARE" brand then you'll lose more & more customers...
Sort it out & make ALIENWARE GREAT again & sort it out soon or I fear for the future of ALIENWARE... & this comment is from a lifelong fan :(
I currently own an M11X/ M15X & M17Xrev2) & if things don't improve I will have to look elsewhere when it comes around to buying my new stuff.
Greetz...

I have to agree with you that Alienware no longer exhibits the level of extreme gaming that it use to. It's little more than a fancy case on an XPS system. However, Microsoft makes several PC operating systems that can handle far more than 12 gigs of RAM. Basically any 64-bit OS with the exception of the basic or starter versions can handle between 16 and 128 gigs of RAM. The basic or starter versions can handle 8 gigs in 64-bit, and every 32-bit OS can handle 4 gigs.
