Laptop Screen Resolution and Quality

I dont mind the low 1366x768 resolutions a lot, but i bought a 14" XPS in January and the panel was so terrible, horrible viewing angels and the screen flickers at low brightness. I was absolutely disappointed that was the only option made available. I wish i could get a different monitor or a different system, but explaing this to dell reps is troublesome due to their poor english.

If you are going to stick up with 720p monitors at least make them good monitors for heaven's sake.

Oh an i think dell should make a move to have the minimum resolution for 13-17" laptops be 1600x900. Sub 13" laptops are fine at 1366x768.

    Thats excellent. I hope the panels are as excellent as they seem in the preview videos. A 900p option on the 15" model would have been good as well. But if it costs dell less to keep only one model of panel in inventory i'd prefer it to be a 1080p panel. I could change the DPI after the fact or the resolution to make it more readable.

    I'm really impressed with the new XPS machines. They look a little too much like the macbook pros (not a good thing imo), but against that, the value proposition is much better.

    Higher resolution screens, better speakers, better keyboard and a larger touchpad surface are wonderful. I prefer physical buttons on my touchpad, but i will try the new touchpad and see how they work.

    Vizio boasted how much time they took to get the touchpad drivers on their laptops perfect. I hope Dell invested the same amount of time in their XPS touchpad Drivers as well.

    Additionally dell has limited bundled software to the dell stage desktop widgets which is excellent.

    If i had to mention 'one more thing' i would say that dell needs to add an optional accessory, a Mini Display Port to VGA/DVI adapter un accessories when configuring a system with a mini display port.

    Finding adapters like those in countries like mine is impossible. I used an Apple converter cable with my XPS 14 but it acts wonky.

    A 1080p screen would be really nice, especially on 14" and 15" screens. I am from India and the cheapest laptop with a 1080p screen available now is a 17" (3D Screen) Inspiron costing 95200 INR + taxes.

    I finally had to settle for a 720p screen Inspiron 15R (with a i7-3612QM , 8Gb Ram @1600Mhz , AMD 7730M Gpu , 1Tb Hard disk and costing about 68000 INR taxes included). I understand that a lot of people opting for budget laptops for basic computing needs wouldn't want a high resolution display. But what I ordered was definitely not a budget laptop (budget laptops here cost about 30000 INR) and I definitely wouldn't mind shelling out a bit more for a 1080p screen if I had the choice.

    Awesome screens were available on XPS laptops over a year back but the entire line of XPS 15 has been discontinued here. My XPS 15 (L501X) which I bought over a year and a half back for about 54000 INR taxes included came with an awesome 1080p B+RG LED Backlit display. Now to get a comparable display I will need to go for an Inspiron costing more than 95000 INR. The cost to manufacture such screens couldn't have gone up that much.

    The Inspiron I finally settled for would have been an almost perfect machine for my needs if it came with a screen as good as my much cheaper 1.5 year old XPS.

    In this day and age where there is a 5 inch cell phone with IPS and 1080 screen (LG) , there is no excuse for 1366x768 to be the only option on any laptop.

    Following up on my previous comment, we have launched 2 new XPS platforms this week. The XPS 14 has a 14" 900p screen as the only option, and the XPS 15 has a 15" 1080p screen as the only option. Moving down the product lineup by price point, you will note we've included full 1080p screens in the Inspiron R Special Edition 15" and 17" products. The more budget friendly options like Inspiron, Inspiron R, Inspiron z and Vostro lineups get from 720p to 900p options.

    I am definately with you on this one, now that technology has given the opportunity  to acheive much higher resoloutions thanks to ivy bridge graphics improvements with battery less consumption, normall 1366 X 768 should not be an excuse anymore with now a day computers like 13 inch monitors and laptop screens.  

    Something should happen with these screens if Dell wants the upper hand in making good quality products, however it all comes down to the price, that is why I think dell is trying to go low resoloution so that comptuers could be cheaper but please have an attempt Dell.

    Thats fine, I understand cost is a significant issue for many but again, screen quality should not be compromised at any resolution and choice should be made available.

    Just a little info for you, i did quite a bit of research, and found out this little tidbit of information, the make of monitor that came with my xps 14, i found quite a few people who ended up with this very same monitor in their lappys as well and all with the exact same set of problems.

    It seems its a problem inherent with this specific make of monitor. People who didn't have the issue, when they checked their monitor, had LG made monitors, and from my experience with my Vostro 1500 with a 1680x1050 LG CCFL monitor, i can say first hand when i put both these systems side by side there is no comparison. The older LG panel is hands down far more beautiful.

    I found an aftermarket replacement screen on amazon, a 1600x900 screen by LG. I was debating whether to purchase it and install it, but i decided againt it due to the cost of shipping all the way to the caribbean and what would happen if the screen neded up being faulty or had dead pixels.

    At the end of the day, i will find a way to work on any resolution screen and if i must, i will get an external monitor, but no matter what, image quality is something that should never be sacrificed.

    I purchased this system as dell had already decided to discontinue it, so im assuming they simply went with the most easily accessed supplier of monitors to complete the last batch od XPS' that were to be shipped. Still, i would like to get this screen replaced.

    I'm from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean and i speak english and the call center natives are spanish speaking so their ability to understand english varies. It's something of a hit and miss process with regard to finding someone who will understand your problem and deal with you quickly.

    BTW, do you guys have any more of those snazzy XPS branded mousepads?

    @veer01_42 Thanks for your idea. As far as the screen on your laptop, flickering at low brightness should not happen. It is possible the display needs to be replaced, or a cable needs to be reseated. I would suggest you reach out to Dell tech support by phone, or if you are on Twitter, the folks on the @DellCares team should be able to help. Sorry for the frustration, but it is understandable.

    While I personally would agree with you on screen resolutions, we have to consider purchase preferences for a diverse set of customers. While a great number of XPS buyers would prefer 720P or higher, a lot of our Inspiron customers do not value high resolutions for basic computing needs. For many, price point is a bigger factor than pixel density, so we try to offer choices where it makes sense. Having said that, we are considering higher screen resolution options on select Inspirons based on feedback we have received elsewhere on IdeaStorm.
