I would like to see a formula-based sort option for the main page that pairs the newness of the idea with the comments it generates and the frequency of the promotions it gets to determine where in the list it is shown.
For example, a new item would be quite near the top because of its newness. However, if it hasn't had any votes for a few hours or days (depending on site traffic over that period) then it should fall down lower. If it has received comments and/or votes it should remain high. However, even if it has thousands of votes, if it hasn't been promoted in a while it should start to slip down.
Such a formula would allow anyone coming to the site to see what is currently the freshest and most popular activity on the site all in a single list. This combined with my idea on making idea promotion easier would serve to keep that main page very active.

It sounds like you are describing the Trending ideas section of the front page.
