Dell needs to put more focus on reducing the thickness of laptops when designing them, Both the current generation of Inspiron and XPS laptops are thicker than the previous gen. Also, these laptops are more wedge-shaped than ever before. Dell's design is going backwards. We want SUPER THIN and relatively UNIFORM THICKNESS for laptops. My Dell Inspiron 1764 is thinner than the current 17R, I would buy another 1764 anyday over the fat wedge 17R. The Next Generation of Dell Laptops have to be around 1" thick around the entire laptop. Not ,74" thick at the front and a crazy thick 1.5" thick at the back. Thats ridiculous design. I don't want some ugly wedge. The previous gen hinge design is also better than the current one. It allows for the battery compartment to stick out in the back without sticking out of the frame. Dell needs a better hinge design for next gen. I mean this design that currently HP and Apple are using:

@bill_b A lot of people buy a computer to be future proof, thus including a thunderbolt port would be beneficial. Would be nice to see Dell include thunderbolt on the new monitor models coming out as well.May 18, 2011 Comment Link

I'm not officially speaking on behalf of Dell when I say I just don't see the value proposition for Thunderbolt at this time. Perhaps by the time the XPS line is refreshsed there will be enough devices that use it to justify the extra cost of adding it. I will agree the potential is there based on performance specs I have seen, and the fact that Intel is putting some major effort behind it.May 18, 2011 Comment Link

It's more like the Macbook Pro than the Air. It should release to sales at the end of the month, I believe. It will have a combo drive (superdrive is Apple marketing speak for said same), but will not have a Bluray option. Slot loading Bluray drives are either non-existant or very difficult for manufacturers to come by in scale right now.May 16, 2011 Comment Link

Win7Dev what are you talking about performance in Photoshop? Just got an XPS 15 and it runs every CS5.5 Application with practically zero slowdown, espcially in Photoshop. As for the original idea, please do not put ports beside exhaust vents.
