With the latest XPS brush up, I was hoping for a better variety, when it comes to select a processor.
An i7-3770 may be the newest generation, but for professional, demanding users, who need the extra performance,
but are not gamers, hence don't like/need the fancy Alienware systems, XPS is not really a choice.
For those customers, who don't need the extreme models (e.g. i7-3960X), there isn't any alternative selection,
but the i7-3820 and i7-3930K would be a very good choice. Not sure if this lack in flexibility is maybe due to overly cost concious aspects, but it makes it rather difficult to find a system that really fits.

What would you be using the system to do? Perhaps that will better help my understanding of your needs.May 31, 2012 Comment Link

Thanks for the hint Cy_J.
Unfortunately the Precisions only offer Xeons and/or i3s: no i7s, other than the mentioned i7-3770 :-(
Looks like it replaced the former i7-2600 in Dell's XPS series, which in the past was really a high end system.
Not anymore. Seems real performance is now restricted to Alienware for the gamers. What a pitty.

Have you considered looking at Dell's Precision line? There is a new line up coming soon that may fit your needs more than a regualr desktop.
