I am a french teacher working in the south of France .The school's computers are Dell and Nec computers.
Like most of my colleagues, I am using "opensource" (free) softwares, and specially Ubuntu for 2 years.
It works perfectly and the pupils who tried Ubuntu like it very much. I hope it will be possible to buy a Dell computer without Windows very soon and I hope that all the Dell computers of my school will use Ubuntu.
Not only because Ubuntu is free (even if it's not insignificant in a french school...) , but because working with Ubuntu forces you to understand and to think how and why you are using your (Dell) computer.
I know that I'm speaking and writing english language like a spanish cow, so I'm sorry.
I just want to finish my message with this: please be the first big computer manufacturer offering Ubuntu or Windows (which is very performant, but not the only one and specially at school) .

Good point, @jmxz. The real target of our votes IS being skewed by some of the merging that has taken place!Aug 15, 2007 Comment Link

@badblood: "STOP BLOODY MERGING IDEAS" Agreed. Merging needs to be reconsidered - hopefully with a better alternative. It's not just the loss of badblood's ideas and points. Merging is misrepresenting my votes too. Votes are often cast based on subtle differences in ideas - "bring me XP on the Inspiron Small Business" might be voted down because I don't want XP anywhere - or because I don't want a choice of OS's in the Small Business section. Depending on which direction the Idea gets merged, it will misrepresent the vote that was cast. Instead I think Dell should be able to "close" Ideas (they'd still be visible on a different part of the site but no more voting) for many reasons including "closed: near dup", "closed: completed", and "closed: bad idea". That way IdeaStorm gets cleaner faster. The original meaning of the votes and ideas are preserved. And it's easy to undo if they made a mistake.Aug 15, 2007 Comment Link

I guess we need better titles, bb. Other than we, ourselves, going through the site and providing a list of likely merge candidates (one that has been absolutely clear is the seemingly endless list of "I want Linux/Ubuntu in xxxx country" entries... THOSE should have been amazingly simple...)Aug 15, 2007 Comment Link

Well that pisses me off no end. You know I have submitted nearly 200 ideas to this bloody site, for better or worse, and nearly 60 of them have been variously abused, deleted, edited, merged and what not. Now if you can't see the difference between this idea and the one I posted...well here it is. If you read this idea carefully it is nothing more than an appeal for Linux on Dell computers, and she uses the education sector as an example. The idea I submitted was that Dell should manufacture and distribute an inexpensive line of computers for schools that run Ubuntu. Different? Well yes. Merged? Why yes. Why, cause the bloody moderators only read the bloody titles. Then they go all bloody paternal/maternal on us. If you can't do it properly, STOP BLOODY MERGING IDEAS, AND GIVE ME MY IDEA AND MY BLOODY POINTS BACK! double thanks.Aug 13, 2007 Comment Link
