Dell needs to get involved and comment on ideas put forth on this site, and then implement them in their systems.
For example, I want to purchase a XPS 15 except for the i5 CPU, the GPU options are pure garbage. An nVidia GT420 is weak and can barely play SC2 at medium settings when the onscreen activity gets ramped up. That is not a sign of a gaming/entertainment laptop. Being able to play Sims or a game released 3 years ago doesn't make it a gaming laptop.
People have posted that XPS laptop line needs better configuration options, specifically better GPUs in the XPS15 model not limited to the i7 processor. Plus, the idea has been promoted quite a bit, but yet to see a response from Dell about addressing this niche. Inspiron should be mainstream, not XPS. And please get rid of Alienware. They're ugly.

I cannot really imagine the GTX460M with 72 Watt, but might the 17inch version can take it. Probably the GT540M is the next XPS GPU, however it still look slender.Otherwise I am agree I also would like to see both brand in laptops, than everybody can take their personal favorite.
Where did you read a single 460M is even on-par with two Radeon 5870 Mobility's in crossfire??
I can read the following:
"the GTX 460M was on par with the DDR3 based Mobility Radeon HD5850."

Seeing the GTX 460M in the XPS 17 would be very awesome.http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-460M.33612.0.html According to this summary, a single 460M is even on-par with two Radeon 5870 Mobility's in crossfire! That's awesome for a mid-range Geforce! Certainly for the performance, FAR more power efficient than two 5870's for sure XP
What you're also not considering so much though Rebel is the GPU costs. A 435M vs Radeon 57**, willing to bet there'd be a price hike, bloating the price of the laptops they're sold in. I'm not saying they're bad GPUs, but it's possible Dell and Nvidia struck a trade deal for the 420, 435 and 445 GPU chips to be offered in the XPS line. Offering others, mebbe a price difference worth considering. But anyway, it's all apples and oranges. I personally would like to see BOTH ATI's and Geforce's offered on all the ranges, just like on the Alienware laptops; where you can choose a Geforce 285 or a Radeon 5850 (or Xfire/SLI for either) on the M17x, or a Geforce 420/460M/Radeon 5770/5850 (nice range!).

andragon:According to this notebookcheck review HD5650 performs a mere 8% better, the HD5730 manages to outshine the GT 435M by a respectable 40%.

Integrated graphics has gotten to the point that for me, I don't even want a video card. It's just extra expense and a drain on the battery. My complaints with Dell are with screen quality/resolution and battery life, and it would be cool to have magnetic power connectors across the line (I assume this isn't done for cost savings).
For instance, start offering LED/IPS screens, a 14" 900p screen, make the 15" 1080p screen available on more systems, and really focus on increasing battery life. Compare power efficiency to competitors on Anandtech's graphs, and Dell is near the bottom.
I really like Dell outside of the battery life issue, but I'm tired enough of weak battery life (5+ hours on a 6 cell) that my next laptop will probably be an Asus.

I purchased an Inspiron 9400 in 2007 and was able to customize it with a GeForce 7900GS and a 2GHz Core 2 Duo. The bus speed on the system was fairly lacking. But I was able to play several games with this mainstream laptop. The whole reason why I ended up buying that laptop was because it was priced well and was heavily customizable. To be honest, I sincerely miss that chassis series. Dell was going in the right direction there.
Sadly, like all 7900GS cards, mine ended up getting the blue/green lines/blocks glitch. I've heard of people at Dell offering replacements due to it being a long-known issue. I'd sure love to get this rig back on it's feet.
But yes, Dell needs to offer more CPU/GPU combinations. With options not just from ATI/AMD but also nVidia for those of us running Linux.
For the record, I don't like the look of the Alienware machines either. I find it a bit tacky and overdone.

Great to hear, I'll be waiting for it!If you are planning to add the new Radeon HD65XXM series, than make sure these are equipped with GDDR5 instead of DDR3. Thank You!

There will be upgraded GPU offerings to the XPS line at some point. I can't get into specific models or time frames, but more options are coming. Changing to under review.Nov 29, 2010 Comment Link

bill_b:I do not meant XPS have to be hard gamer laptop like alienware, but should offer better graphics.
I feel their is too big step between Alienware and XPS graphics and we just cannot find our demands.
We might would like to see the GTX 460M (don't know it's power consumption), but rather the power efficient HD57xx, 5830.
No complain about CPU power, Core i5/i7 is fairly enough for everything even a Core i3 or a low voltage processor.
I also had few similar idea like ArDarsh, so I welcome any Dell member who willing to consider or discuss this important suggestions.
