Improve Dell's Linux repository; Support Ubuntu better.

Did you know that Dell has software repositories for Linux? It does. But they are only maintained by the community and only contain RPMs.

They are poorly documented and feel sloppy in general. I ran into problems while trying to use the firmware repository. I saw this message too much: "Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched..."

Dell should actively support this repository. It is a great idea! A well maintained software repository from Dell would be a real blessing to all of us Linux users with their computers.

It is not that hard to setup a standard Debian repository. Look at how Google or Wine have theirs setup.

You should never tell people to use a PPA directly - PPAs are not GPG-signed, and should therefore not be considered "secure" by customers. If a PPA is the best way for you to maintain your software (which I don't doubt) then you should mirror and sign. See http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9074923/mirror_repository.sh for a sample mirror&sign script, as used by the Mythbuntu distribution

Ubuntu rocks! But I need a repository with .deb files, please Dell. And perhaps 2 repo's for deb and 2 for rpm. 1 repo which is Dell maintained and 1 which is community supported.

The existence of the repositories is a good thing, but what really matters is the quality of their content and their ease of use. And a question: Doesn't Dell officially "support" Ubuntu?? If it doesn't, it really should!

Woohoo! ... oh wait ... I don'tmean to sound negative but, but normally means not much is going to happen over the next year or so. But never mind. Dell actually has repositories for Linux right now which is the main thing.

Thanks for the response John! It is good to hear that Dell is working on this! I must admit, I did not really know how much work goes into maintaining a Debian repository, but figured a company like Dell would be able to do it. Thanks for the link to the PPA. I didn't even know such things existed. Doesn't that count as a repository? I added it to my list of repositories and updated some packages to the Dell versions.
