The Product
The Dell ST2220T touchscreen monitor is an important offering in this segment because of the very attractive price and overall quality.

The Problem
Meanwhile, with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview availability, limits of the current optical tracking system implementation revealed that this monitor will simply be useless in touchscreen only setup (where no physical keyboard is desired or present). Windows 8, to operate in touch only mode (Metro oriented), requires access to the borders "first-pixel". The "first-pixel" detection is used to invoke from the sides, either the running tasks, the "Windows Charms" or the running program menus. The limiting factor of the current optical system comes from the screen bezel being too close from the displayable area.

The Idea
My suggestion is to create a new Dell touchscreen monitor roughly based on the current ST2220T design that would leave slightly more space between the optical tracking system and the displayable screen area. This way it would be possible to trigger the "first-pixel" efficiently and thus, operate Windows 8 adequately in touchscreen only scenarios. My current estimation is that about 7mm (the current optical tracking precision) on each side would be enough.

The Opportunity
I think this idea would be very cost effective to develop since the current ST2220T design can be entirely reused. Also, being the first company to offer such an affordable screen that could adequately leverage Windows 8 so early in the product life would clearly be a commercial advantage for Dell.
