2560x1600 or higher resolution support for laptops with docking stations

Our frequently-traveling engineers are slighted because Dell travel-intended notebooks do not support very-high resolution monitors (such as the Dell 2560x1600-resolution 3007wfp). These engineers plug their notebooks into docking stations on their desks, unlike their less-frequently-traveling counterparts, who use Precision 470 workstations with very-high-res graphics cards. I think Dell makes only one notebook (the 8.61-pound Dell Precision M90) with a chip that could handle the 3007wfp, but I've been unsuccessful at confirming that a dual-link DVI connection through a docking station is available. The 24" and 27" Dell monitors are nice, but their 1920x1200-max resolution is not a substitute for the value of 2560x1600.

One would think that dell would at least tell us yes, or no to this issue.  Its shameful that dell is letting this slide,  we were buying a lot of Dell computers, now we have to go to other suppliers who can meet our needs: A w500 laptop and docking station.  It lights up our 30" monitors without any problems (dvi dual-link though the dock).

NicoleM: There seems to be no working displayport to dual link dvi adapter on the market. If you got just one 30" to drive, you could use an HP workstation notebook with a dock (model numbers escape me), or Lenovo W700 without. Previous generation Macbook Pro with a proper dual link dvi will work as well.

I am less lucky, since I got spoiled by working with two Samsung 305Ts.The only somewhat-portable way of driving them is to use a cube SFF lugged around in a backpack. This is fine if you are a Spartan warrior-coder, but gets tiring after a while. I wish Dell could provide a displayport to dual link dvi adapter or a 2x dual link dvi capable docking station, so I could move to a 'lightweight' 8 pound notebook instead.

Is this there a solution to this issue?  We just purchased this M6400Covet, with the E/Port, Plus 210W Port Replicator, and a 3007WFP Monitor - that I can't use because we can't get the resolution better than 1280 x 800.  After two hours online with Dell tech, the recommendation I got was "get a different monitor" (bad salesmanship) or "try a bunch of adapters / alternative docking stations and see if that works" (bad service / technological expertise).   Since this issue isn't a new one judging by the myriad of threads online complaining about it, I'm hoping there's a resolution I've missed?

Is the dongle going to be out soon or do we have to wait longer to use our 30" screens?

@mattjvincent: Sorry about not being able to get this dongle out sooner.  Currently there is no other solution or workaround for getting your 3007 display to run at full resolution with the M6400.  I have been informed that we are still tracking for the end of the year for that part.

mano_g: Are the "display port to DVI-Duallink dongle" for the 3007WFP Monitor still on track for end of year?  Are there any other temporary solutions/workarounds?  I have the m6400 with the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700 and would really like to use my 3007WFP HC monitor...

Sorry I guess my comment wasn't perfectly legible :) I do actually plan to let work buy me a 4400 or 6400, so I do understand the target audience. What I was more meaning to say, was that when you redesign the 1730, please try to give me most of the features of the new 6400, because if you simply swapped out the Quadro for SLI, added some sound upgrades, you'd have pretty much a pretty darn good gaming machine as well. So yes, I like the design!
