Having muddled around with the Downloads & Drivers page, trying to add updates only to find I did it in the wrong order which caused problems with my Dell, my suggestion is that for users who log in and supply their Service Tag, have the list that displays show the recommended updates in the correct order to be installed, based on How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order. Or at least have a link to it from that page.
I think that page needs some work anyway because even after I installed a bios update, it told me I needed the bios update. My experience with it left me frustrated enough that I've decided to wait to use it until it's more "fool proof" because I'm obviously a fool.

Thanks for the heads up pudgyone. I am sorry that they got left out somehow. Merging should still retain the comments.Jan 20, 2012 Comment Link

I was wondering why for the two new systems I have recently reinstalled why the Drivers are no longer listed as relevant to the service tag.natakuc4
For example an older system:
Opposed to a newer system:
In both cases a Service Tag is entered. The older system has the driver set narrowed to the hardware that was shipped, if you want the other files you may select all files.
In the case of my own system its fine because I know what I had but in the case of my friends Latitude E6510 I had to download more or less everything and install by trial and error using the limited information given in the original system configuration.
I know there is the factory settings and the Dell quick restore implemented now but it is no excuse to get sloppy on the drivers and downloads page.
Also in all 3 cases of new Dell hardware has performed at least 3 times worse with the factory settings than with a clean install. My friend thought he had a rubbish computer when he had an excelelnt new Latitude (my Inspiron 6400 also on Windows 7 was outperforming it).

Thanks for the update, hopefully the driver order is revised to make it easier for everyone. Is the download manager going to be improved aswell? It seems to be really bad...natakuc4

Quick update here: I have received word that the Drivers and Downloads page is in the process of being reworked. The Driver order is being considered as an option but It is not known if it will be in the final build. Thanks for posting and I will let you know when I receive further information.Jun 12, 2011 Comment Link

I don't think the Drivers and Downloads hub has ever been really good. A couple of times I've had to change operating systems of my Dell machines during upgrades, where I've been on the phone to them because the driver in question has been deleted, or is incompatible for whatever reason. Every time this happens they say they've made a note of that and will sort it out...Hyncharas
Low and behold, however, the people that run Technical Support either don't forward the information when something is wrong to site management, or can't be bothered to fix it themselves. 1-2 months pass when you try to download it, and nothing has happened!
The bottom line is, I don't think users should hold their breath for any dedicated site support with software updates.

I have to give a hearty second to this! I usually sing Dell's praises, but not in this case. I was trying to load several drivers for an older laptop and it took a lot longer than it should have. Recommended vs. Optional, install order, lack of description. On the whole, a very frustrating experience.
