Revert Precision M6600 & successors back to 16:10 LCD panel

I have a M6400 Covet and one of the best features is the 16:10, with 1920 x 1200 resolution.  The panel/display & 1 GB video was one of the main reasons I got the Precision Covet, paying a premium price.  I was pleased that the M6500 was upped to 32 GB RAM capability, and VRAM to 2 GB capable--could look forward to upgrading in future.

But the M6600 downsizing  to 16:9 is disturbing and really doesn't make sense.  DUH!

Appreciators and users of the Precison laptop want and expect the highest resolution panels.  Being a premium product, and priced accordingly, the Precision M6XXX should retain the higher end panel--we want resolution, screen real estate, and look to products like the Precision M6XXX to provide such capability--otherwise, why pay such a premium?

For programming, design and other serious work, users need such resolution--if could be 4:3, even better.  But 16:9 in the Precision, why?  What is the thinking behind it?  If it is just to save costs then that is wrong thinking?

I've wanted an M50, M90 ever since I had the Inspiron 7500 with the 15.4 screen--largest at the time in a laptop.  Then went for the Inspiron 8200 with the UXGA display, to get the 1600 x 1200; stayed with that for a while,   Went with the Precison M6400 for reasons cited above.  It is all about screen real estate--being able to see more, do more--that's why willing to pay a premium.

So please consider going back to 16:10 on the Precision.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it--there was not much wrong with the M6400; M6500 stayed true to form, so why not keep it so, just upgrade the processor on the M6600, if feel must change something for each model--don't know why the annual refresh being needed--better to spend resources fixing bugs in system, and not detract from one of the Precision M6XXX key strong points.

Well Done DELL (well "half done" anyway) At least the RGB LED option has been added to the Precision M6600.
However to get me to part with £4K+ I want 1920x1200 not a compromised 1920x1080 screen, else I've just lost 10% work area.

@Backbutton: Agree with you 100%... in the precision case and also in the M18x case... And of course, the matte is a must! As I did write before in another thread: Dell as experince in making color changing snap-in/snap-out covers for switching the outside design of the lid... they can make realtively easily a snap-in/snap-out E2E glossy cover for those that like to see themselves in the screen... for those that do not need that annoying 'effect', we can take out the glossy cover and be as happy as a fish in its water...
Dell can gain more costumers (and happier ones!) by listening to this personalized design option (which can also be subject to an additional cost... (something that Dell and Alienware may like very much).

I think this is much more prevelant than the score would indicate.  We cannot be the only onew with this complaint.  Finding a business laptop with the kind of resolution you describe is difficult anymore.

I agree too. 16:9 screens are good for watching movies but I use my laptop for professional use like programming in Eclipse. I need more vertical space and resolution. If I want to watch a movie I shut down my laptop and use a TV. Resurrecting the 4:3 screens would be fine too, but realistically I don't think that's possible in the HD age. 16:10 would be a good compromise for business class laptops.

With you 100%. My current laptop is an M6400 with wuxga matte RGB LED screen, love it to bits. Like you I was disappointed not to see this display in the M6600 option list. I'll be a long time between upgrades if the wuxga option is not available (especially the matte RGB version)

I mainly use ACAD and like you need maximum screen resolution, my last two laptop purchases were driven by the screen. My previous laptop was similar to yours 8100 uxga.

Based on the Ackowleged staus hopefully Dell is paying attention and better display options will emerge.
    Inhale and hold   :  )
