Dell You've Way Overdone the Reduction in Configuration Options

I guess I'm in the minority, but everyone I know is quite disturbed at the huge decrease in configuration options. Those options are the primary reason I've been ordering Dell computers for many years.  Now I find that it is impossible to get some of the logical configurations I'd like... particularly on desktops.

One specific that you've seldom (if ever) provided:  why can't one order a small HD for the OS and a larger 2nd drive for storage?  With SSDs becoming popular, this option is a no-brainer.

Case in point - all of the sudden the ATI Radeon HD5970 is no longer available on any Alienware Desktops.  From what I've researched, the HD5970 is the fastest card out there.  It's still available on the 9100, but why not your flagship performance line???

I was considering getting a Aurora with a HD5970 for Photoshop work.  Now most all of the Alienware desktop configurations come with lower-end graphics card, with most of the configuraitons coming with dual graphics cards.  Photoshop can not make use of dual graphics card configurations.

The amount of configurations available is why I started purching DELL computers to start with. As the configurations narrow I find myself looking to other brands. Not all computer users are the same nor do they want the same options. I want more options, bring back the options - The people that dont like options generally go to walmart or some outlet and get the whatever the days flavor is there.

I think since this post has got more than 340 votes (and counting) Bill should give some comment (update on Dell's plans) on this topic.

This is my 5th LCD in past 2 years. This time I wanted to buy something which will last me at least till the monitor is covered under its warranty period.

After much deliberation and thinking I decided to buy something big and worthy of the money I would be investing. My initial selection was DELL E248WFP, but once who suffers the pain of using a TN panel LCD , won?t bother to buy it again.

Yes!  I'm disappointed to see that Dell put the very limit configuration options that I would like to have for new desktop. Since Dell put more limit on configurations, Dell is turning me away and I'm now looking at HP that offers more configuration options to buy one. :(  If Dell want to keep their loyal customers, they ought to put better configuration options to keep the customers comin' and buy the Dell products.

I just want to have better memory and video cards desktop.

I couldn't agree more with the original poster. The reduction of options is stark and a dramatic contrast to the competition that still allow high levels of configurablility. Even the Latitude's are like this now, making it hard for a person to get the exact configuration they want. Not everyone wants 8 GB of ram just to get a decent video card (stretching but still an example)
