Provide Upgrades for XPS 700 Owners

Dell originally marketed the Dell XPS 700 as a fully featured, fully upgradable gaming computer - this included a motherboard engineered for enthusiasts that you could upgrade down the road if you wanted to.

However, a lot of Dell XPS 700 owners are a bit angry over the use of the BTX motherboard. BTX seems to have lost its backing and ATX is the popular standard. Not only that, XPS 700 owners can not upgrade their systems to Quad Core due to the motherboards design, however this issue was fixed in the XPS 710.

Lets quote Lionel Menchaca on this one:

"For folks that are concerned about future upgradeability, note that the XPS 700 is the first system we’ve introduced that was designed to support an industry-standard BTX system board down the road. This means if you want to swap out the system board down the road, to accommodate future technology, you can. Some custom cables are required for certain connections."

Go to Newegg.com or NCIX.com or anywhere else and tell me where you can find a NVIDIA 680i Chipset BTX Motherboard! Didn't think so.

There has been a long, long discussion at the Dell Community Forum (Link: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=xps_desk_ge...) regarding the Dell XPS 700, it's issues, and how Dell have seemingly pulled the wool over several peoples eyes.

I believe that Dell needs to set the record straight once and for all, either the XPS 700 is fully upgradable or it isn't.

I am experiencing the same problem mentioned here. This did not die with the upgrade program. I purchased my XPS 720 in August. I was told that I was getting a 590i motherboard. The documentation shows this as well. Instead according to my Nvidia Ntune program I have a Nforce 4 SLI 570i. I am just as upset as the XPS 700 owners and more so because I paid for the XPS 710 system and essentially got the messed up XPS 700 system for much more money. I then found out about the upgrade program and tried to at least purchase it. The website told me that I was ineligible for the upgrade. Then the XPS 710 line was discontinued as well as the upgrade program, and I am left with having paid for a XPS 710 and instead getting less than a XPS 700 system. I want to know what Dell plans on doing about this, obviously ongoing problem. How many other people are going through this as well?

the more i read about this the more upset i am getting. I just used CPU-Z to check out some specs and it tells me that the chipset in my XPS710 is "NForce 4 SLI edition and 570 SLI". I will open the box and look myself just to confirm what CPU-Z is telling me but i,m sure i will find a 570 SLI chip, can anybody say the word FRAUD. I purchased this pc on Jan 18th 2007 and went thru all the specs on the phone with my sales rep and was told it was a nvidia 590 board and chipset Either the sales reps are kept out of the loop or they are also told to lie about this. Also When i purchased my pc i was also told that i was getting an actual creative Sound Blaster- X-FiTM XtremeMusic not the scaled back dell oem version that i got. I will say this again, this entire pc cost me 5600.00 including the monitor which should tell Dell that i am willing to pay for what i want! What is the point of trying to nickel and dime a customer like me . If it meant paying 200.00 more to get the real components don't you think i would have done that. I just hope that Dell plans to keep me as a customer and fix this problem with the motherboard, i will live with the soundcard as it was just an add on for me with the pc. The upgrade ability and the 590 SLI board and chipset is really what i want Dell to address.

Here is some proof that we didn't even get a real 590 chipset... I know it's old, but it is still proof- http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=xps_desk_genhdw&message.id=36244#M36244

I really wish i has seen this thread before i purchased my xps i would have waited or gone to my local pc manufacturer and built my own. I too bought based on the upgradeability factor!! At this point i am extrememly dissapointed with Dell for misleading me about the 590SLI chipset. I sent them an email a few weeks ago and never heard back. For the money i spent (or should i say they took) i expected more. Hopefully they will do the right thing and upgrade us all because at this point i have nothing good to say about Dell . This was my first purchase from them and if they don't do the right thing it will be my last. All i can say is i spent 5000 grand on this pc and at this point i feel like i was robbed

I also agree. Really disappointed about my xps700 (no upgrade possibility, doesnGt support OC and DDR2 800 etc). Tried twice to sell the machine on eBay with no luck. This is a matter of honesty. Especially for such a big company.
Anyway personally, I wouldnGt buy any DELL again in the future for my home & work.

What I'd like to see is a computer built to my specs (I guess i'm lazy), that way i'd pretty much know that dell didn't skimp and throw in a bunch of proprietary junk,

I sold my XPS 700 because of these issues and will never buy a desktop for myself from Dell again thanks to this. But, Dell more than owes these people some payback. My E6600/Asus 680i is overclocked well over 3.0 GHZ stable which is what I thought I was getting in the XPS 700. Make it up to these people Dell!!!!

I agree 100%, there was so much misinformation it was basically false advertising.
