Just make a global Dell Quickset i.e. one download, once downloaded it checks what OS you have, verifies that you have a Dell BIOs and then downloads the latest version of Dell Quickset for that OS. Much like the Dell Support Centre except of course the Latitudes and other systems have to be allowed to have it.
This way the newest version of Dell Quickset is available to all systems. Vostro, Studio, Inspiron, Latitude XPS etc.
Note I would like to be able to install it even on a Dell Desktop, to get the volume meter when using the likes of a Dell Multimedia Keyboard. It can of course detect it is a desktop and forget about the power/battery settings. I am using some other program for that but would of course prefer Dell Quickset.
The Vostro 1014, 1015 for example don't have a Dell Quickset download on their driver and downloads page, why not? I have seen on the community forums some users wanting it. If it was global to all Dell systems this would save them the hassle.
Having all these different versions is particularly annoying when someone upgrades their OS. They may not have a native Dell Quickset Driver on their downloads page and have no choice but to look for it on a newer system, it is hit or miss if their system is compatible.
For example those installing Quickset on an Inspiron 1300 or 6000 with Vista. The Inspiron 1300, 6000 and Inspiron 6400 shared a common Windows XP Dell Quickset Driver. Yet the Windows Vista Quickset driver for the Inspiron 6400 denied one to install Dell Quickset on the Inspiron 1300 and 6000.

I don't think there is much in the way of hacking functionality. It essentially carries out the same functionality on all the systems.natakuc4
e.g. Fn Keys, if keyboard doesn't have Fn keys i.e. the hardware isn't there then this functionality cannot be hacked.
Media keys, if laptop has no media keys then actually the standard quickset (e.g. for the Inspiron 1300) will work with the Dell multimedia SK 8135 keyboard media keys. i.e. the functionality is still there. It is unlocked only if the hardware is there.
Power settings it pretty much will provide the options depending on the OS; Vista and 7 have power settings by default so Quickset pretty much just lets windows manage it, on XP Quickset has to manage it.
A few system will have buttons exclusive to them. Of course this functionality can't be achieved in the other/older systems which don't have the buttons.
The point I am making is that the differences in Quickset version functionality depends on whether hardware is detected or not. The OS plays a part aswell but not that much; I managed to get the Inspiron 1300 to install Dell Quickset within Windows 7, I had to install it in compatibility mode and it worked perfectly except that it gave a UAC prompt at start up to overcome this I used the "Application Compatibility Toolkit". XP power settings did not get in the way.
The requirements for Dell Quickset should be similar to Dell Support Centre. i.e. do you have a Dell BIOs and are you running Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 or Linux?

I would really love this as well, but I don't see it happening.Hyncharas
The reason is they don't want people hacking functionality of laptop on another, I suppose, like how the old M17XX had a version for every model (M1710, M1730, etc.), even though the functionality is basically the same.
