"Customers needing parts for their computer will be able to check out our guide to computer parts and components which gives a breakdown of all the parts for desktops and laptops."

This quote in the Storm session holds some interest, please expand more on it... Are Dell for example going to sell all the interesting Dell odds and ends that one finds on eBay?

This includes things such as hinges, rubber feet, individual keyboard keys, laptop keyboards, screws, motherboards,  desktop bluetooth modules, screens, clips, Graphic Cards, RAM, PCI Cards and all the misc parts one finds on the Service Manual. If the quote denoted above does not imply it Dell really should offer such a service and for a decent price. Dell should naturally have some of these parts as refurbished and/or as new.

I think Dell Outlet should have a dedicated subsection denoted: Parts and Upgrades Shop (refurbished/new parts). The condition of the part needs to be clearly marked on the price and description. Naturally this can be further split into common subsections such as power (batteries and adaptors) and bring up a full list of parts when a Service Tag or search for a system is input.

Windows 7 Upgrade Product Keys should be purchable with a download option also on such an Outlet. Downloadable media has already been mentioned here, perhaps Dell can negotiate a discount with Microsoft (a sort of OEM-Upgrade licence).

In addition when using the drivers and downloads page for a system when a Service Tag is input should list all the drivers for that system. This has been problematic of late and I have mentioned this here. Getting back on track however, if parts are upgraded via Outlet or elsewhere the end user should be able to update the driver set associated with their Dell Service Tag.

i.e. if I have an XPS 8300 system with Service Tag abcdefg purchased with integrated graphics and soundcard and purchase an ATI graphics card and Creative Soundblaster for it from Dell Outlet, I should be able to change/update the driver set.

[For some reason I cannot upload a picture]

Essentially when you load up your Service Tag abcdefg for a Dell XPS 8300 in the Drivers and Downloads Page you should get the following x tabs:

[abcdefg customised by user date (zz/zz/zzzz)] [abcdefg original system shipped by Dell (yy/yy/yyyy)] [All XPS 8300 files]

The customised tab should be able to be added/removed by the end user by means of selecting downloads from within all the XPS 8300 files. However the ability to link the Driver from other Models or the FTP website could equally be benificial. Next in order to ensure some people don't mess around with this and screw up peoples service tag configurations by typing in random configurations. There should be a Dell website scan of the system to verify the system you want to change is your system. There should also be a way of changing the default Operating System for the user customised configuration.

This can be useful if the system is sold second hand e.g. by I.T. Professionals in large corporations or if such systems are sold back/recycled back to Dell and put on Dell Outlet.

When a replacement/upgrade part is purchased from Dell, full instructions should be sent via email on how to fit (or with link to the Service Manual) and instructions on how to upgrade the drivers and downloads customised field.

Also would be good to have the ability to chat with Dell sales about purchasing spares for repairs and have a product manual for most new systems listing the part no.s right down to the screws and rubber feet.

There are so many things here I agree with.  Nice job.

Had a little extra thought about this idea. I was thinking there should be a fitting skill rating of 1 to 10.

    • RAM in easy accesible RAM compartments, Rubber Feet, PCI Express Cards should have a difficulty rating of 1-2.
    • Hard drives should have a difficulty rating of 3 due to the need of an OS reinstall.
    • RAM, Wireless cards under keyboards maybe a rating of 4.
    • Desktop Processors a rating of 5-6.
    • Desktop Mainboards, Laptop Screens a rating of 7-8.
    • Laptop processors a rating of 9.
    • Laptop Mainboards a rating of 10.

The user should get a warning dialogue when they purchase a part with a rating above 5 saying that fitting this part is quite involved and that they might want to get their local computer store for example to fit it. Maybe there should be an option to buy the part through some common trusted computer stores such as PC World where they will gain a little revenue via part fitting and then deal with any warranties if necessary.

Naturally there should still be the option for advanced users to do everything on their own. 30 day warranties or 90 day warranties should be available on the supplied parts however there should be a disclaimer that damage of the system due to careless fitting is not covered.

The above Idea was several ideas but they all fit together so I made it as one.

Also an optional Dell branded toolkit for fitting parts should be made available.
