Latest BIOS for Precision T5500 is A11 (11/2/2011) still uses antiquated Intel's Rapid Storage Technology OROM v. 8, whereas Intel has shipped a number of newer versions with large hard drive support > 2TB.
According to Intel, all DELL needs to do is update OROM in their BIOS to v 10.5 or later: http://communities.intel.com/thread/18683?start=30&tstart=0
Intel's chipset ICH10R supports large harddrives, and BIOS also works fine with them, but there is no way for user to update the Intel's OROM so that RAID can be configured.

@Yurik thanks for your post. The BIOS for the Dell Precision T3500 and T5500 will be updated with v 10.8 of Intel’s Rapid Storage Technology OROM in the January/February time frame. This will address SATA3 drive spin-up times and will support >2Tb drives. I will follow up as soon as I know the exact date of the BIOS update.
