I have a Dell Studio 15, and one thing I never liked was how the fan only has 4 or 5 speeds at which it can run. This means the fan will go from off to audible in an instant, which is very intrusive. If you look at something like Macbooks on the other hand, the fan speed gradually ramps up and down and doesn't have those set speeds like the Dell, leading to a much less annoying fan noise expirience.
