DELL should provide a Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) driver for the device Broadcom USH CV w/ fingerprint reader that comes with DELL Latitude E Series laptops to allows using the built-in fingerprint reader with any WBF compatible applications (UPEK, DigitalPersona...) by making it recognized in the Biometric Devices Control Panel from Windows 7. In my opinion this would improve the usability of the fingerprint reader significantly.
Status update:
Please see Martha's comment and link to the new driver. Thank you all for your patience, and thank you to norbalino for the idea submission!

With DigitalPersona software, we can login at websites and softwares! Is it really useful to only logon at Windows?Aug 5, 2011 Comment Link

Lets not be picky - my e6400 wasn't even among supported laptops but it works (it is mentioned as supported in some of the needed software but I would have never found it if not for this thread).Again to reiterate - instructions need to be followed (for the SW install linked by DELL employee). Some older laptop users will have to download software from different a model(s) support pages.
The end result - it's slow on my laptop too (3 seconds after a swipe windows will start loading, it's less that 1 sec. on my old HP and VAIO - it is noticeable).

The instructions require precise installation order and a number of files in addition to the file listed for download in R308326 (as well as uninstallation of previous ControlPoint software). It's nice to finally have WBF working but Dell could have done a better job easing the installation and/or upgrade. A little more QA and engineering is all that was needed.Jul 27, 2011 Comment Link

I noticed that this idea is closed, after attempting to get the provided software to work on my xt 2 and failing I was curious if there are plans to provide similar functionality on it. All of the similar topics for the xt 2 were merged into this threadJul 25, 2011 Comment Link

@nobody_askedSorry for the delay responding, yes those are the same H/W IDs that I have, I hope from your later post the firmware upgrade fixed things for you ...
@tux_lx
Yes there does seem to be about a 1 second delay after swiping before Windows acknowledges the fingerprint and unlocks itself.
ActualIy I also have an external USB fingerprint reader attached to my docking station (because it's difficult to swipe the inbuilt one when the lid is closed!) this is AES2501A based and does not suffer the same delay.
Also I wish that swiping a fingerprint would cancel the screensaver (like a keypress or mouse waggle) but this affects both fingerprint devices, so it more likely a Windows issue, not a Dell issue.

<sniff... sniff...> tears of joy running down the cheeks...Very impressed that Dell not only listened to our request, but also took the time to post a response. Truly a red-letter day indeed. Faith restored.
Congrats, Dell and many thanks!
