It would be a nice option to be able to select a backlit keyboard for all laptops, as an upgrade option. Not just on selected models, but allow this to be an upgrade option.

It a very nice feature to have on a laptop. It's easy to see the keys and if you're in a dark room, it's very convient to use without turning on the lights or trying to use the lit from the screen to see the keyboard.

To save the battery, there can be toggle key to active the backlit when required otherwise it will remained off (in-active).
We have seen Dell reponse on this suggestion. Is there any laptop coming in markete with this feature??

Do not worry the extra cost of backlit-keyboard. Offer as option to all model and the costumers will pay the extra.

Back lit keyboards on laptops would be nice, but it will use up battery life quicker.

You know what?  I think this is absolutely a terrible response.

    Why?

Because i added in a backlit keyboard to my Dell XPS m1530.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/645379-dell-xps-m1530-backlit-keyboard-mod-instructions.html

It doesn't take a large engineering department to figure out that all a backlit keyboard requires are keys that can be seen through, an LED strip panel, a place for ground, a place for +5, and a basic switch.

I built the mod for my system for under $30, using a brand new backlit Studio keyboard and a brand new Vostro keyboard, both bought from Ebay.

I think the response here is a cop-out.  Dell only offers so many models.  A lot of those models have similar design structures as a cost cutting measure, allowing interchangable parts across multiple systems.  The LCD screen i have in my XPS wasn't even originally made for the XPS, but the interface was Dell, i did my research before hand about the different screen types and interfaces, and so i put it in my machine and it worked just fine.

This one isn't hard, Dell.  if I can do it for under $30, you guys should be able to offer it for less once you mass produce them.

Thank you for the update, Bill. Yes it would be nice as an option to be able to add it. Even if it was a little more to be able to select it, the backlit keyboard is worth the option.

    Side note...
If there would be some type of email notification here, like in the Forums, I would have been notified sooner.

That would be disappointing.  From the perspective of someone who regularly burns the midnight oil on forums, by email/chat and even in MS Office, I like to have a keyboard I can see without turning on lamps in my room.

I appreciate that Dell doesn't really have partnerships with companies that specialise in backlit keyboards; preferring to confine them to the laptop market, but people use desktops for many different things (particularly animators and programmers for companies such as yours) are based throughout the world and, sometimes, for the sake of saving the lighting bills, backlit technology is useful.

Thanks for your idea post, pudgyone. Due to current costs of backlit keyboards, we offer them on a limited number of models. As costs come down, we plan to scale the offering to more and more laptop lines. However, it is not likely we will see a day when we have 100% coverage at all price points.
