The DELL XPS 15z showed that DELL can make thin and good looking laptops with quality parts for a much nicer price than what Apple can. In order to show that you really mean business, you need to fine-tune this wonderful model.
Presenting the DELL XPS 15zx!

FEATURES:
- intel Ivy Bridge i5/ i7 QM
- OLED 1920x1200 (16:10), matte 15'' screen: since OLED screen use more power than LCD screens when showing white colours, there should be a program included where you can change the intensity of the white colour to save some power.
Option 1)
Full white intensity
Option 2)
Adjust the intensity with a percentage bar
Option 3)
Auto-adjustment of the intensity when you have a mostly white screen - this option can be further customized with a percentage bar for what the intensity should be set to when you have a white screen.
OLED uses less power when showing colours and especially black, so this could be a great solution to the problem. One can always dim the screen, but that's a common feature. This, however, would make DELL XPS 15zx extra special
- no logo beneath the screen and the logo on the lid is moudled as part of the lid instead of being a plastic "sticker"
- JBL speakers
- USB 3.0 x 4
- designed like the DELL XPS 13 with improved cooling including carbon fibre bottom, improved ventilation and cooling paste - NO SHINY GORILLA GLASS- better cooling with less noise than the 14z
- real metal chrome trim or a design without the trim
- sturdier lid without flex
- high quality plastic or metal bezel - no glossy finish!
- nVIDIA 600 series GPU with Optimus technology as standard - a GTX 600 series GPU as an option
- slot-load optical drive with optional Blu-ray support
- 2MP webcam
- 9-cell battery
- better backlight - only the signs should be lit up, not the space between the keys
- options for other wireless cards
- Creative Sound Core3D - quad core sound and voice processor
- standard keyboard layout - like the DELL XPS 15, but with the XPS 13 color scheme
The Keyboard will look similar to the keyboard v.2.0 on the DELL XPS 15.
Note the smaller speaker grills for added keyboard space:
To give justice to the JBL speakers the DELL XPS 15zx will come with, if it becomes reality, a decent sound card is needed. Instead of going for a dedicated sound card, you could implement the Creative Sound Core3D, a quad core sound and voice processor which comes with low power consumption and many neat features in addition to a compact design.
Who would even consider a MacBook Pro if you get this right? :)
Status Update: This Idea has been partially implemented with the release of the new XPS 15. Please see bill_b's comments for further information. Thank you for posting!

Always glad to help! :) I am very pleased with the result, but if you want some suggestions for improvements to make it even better, I have made a new post here: http://www.ideastorm.com/idea2ReadIdea?v=1340994492913&Id=087700000008j0bAAA
I now realize your reason for going with Gorilla Glass. Would there be a chance for you to go with the Corning Gorilla Glass 2.0 next time for reduced weight? I heard you can have even less glare with the new version.

Hi, all. I'm back to update my previous comment since we just launched the new XPS 15 this week. We've made a significant shift in the direction of the XPS brand. We're going big on style, materials, build quality, warranty support and enterprise integration. We also have the Inspiron R Special Edition, which serves to fill the gap left by the new XPS line for customers who were fans of the previous generation XPS chassis and brand tenets. Here is how we came out with respect to the original idea:
-
intel Ivy Bridge i5/ i7 QM- check!
-
OLED 1920x1200- We went with WLED for power consumption reasons. When coupled with the proprietary color engine software included with the system, we're able to deliver impressive color, 1080p resolution, excellent viewing angles with a relative power savings of 40% over the previous gen display.
-
no logo beneath the screen and the logo on the lid is moudled as part of the lid instead of being a plastic "sticker"- We stuck with the logo on the screen bezel, and the logo on the lid is definitely not a sticker. We also moved all the service tag, Windows and Intel stickers under a removable metal panel on the bottom of the system, giving it a very clean and sophisticated look.
-
JBL speakers- The brand tenets of the new XPS do not include "co-branding" of any component. That clean look I spoke about above drives this decision. We did spec the system from day one with the same class of unbranded speaker as the JBL. However, there is no subwoofer as before due to the chassis configuration. We left the co-branding and subwoofer to the Inspiron R Special Edition by using Skull Candy speakers on both platforms and a subwoofer on the 17".
-
USB 3.0 x 4- We fitted 3 in there.
-
designed like the DELL XPS 13 with improved cooling including carbon fibre bottom, improved ventilation and cooling paste - NO SHINY GORILLA GLASS- better cooling with less noise than the 14z- It shares the same design direction and many materials with the XPS 13. We chose not to go with CF bottom this time around but instead did a mag alloy with silicone coated bottom. The silicone coating serves as a heat shielding element much as CF does, and the weight is still in line with what we would expect to see from a CF bottom. Corning Gorilla Glass is there for reasons of structural integrity, thin-ness and scratch resistance. With Gorilla Glass we're able to mold the panel directly to the glass and shave some thickness out, and the bonding has the added benefit of contributing the the overall solid feel of the system.
-
real metal chrome trim or a design without the trim- No chrome trim around the edge, but we used a machined aluminum band around the palmrest.

-
sturdier lid without flex- Check. See Gorilla Glass comments.
-
high quality plastic or metal bezel - no glossy finish!- Very thin bezel bonded under glass. It's plastic, though.
-
nVIDIA 600 series GPU with Optimus technology as standard - a GTX 600 series GPU as an option- GT640m 2GB GDDR5 is the top GPU offering. GT630M 1GB GDDR5 is the base option.
-
slot-load optical drive with optional Blu-ray support- Check.
-
2MP webcam- 1.3MP with dual array microphones.
-
9-cell battery- Check.
-
better backlight - only the signs should be lit up, not the space between the keys- This would require a 2-shot injection molding keyboard manufacturing process. This idea has been posted on IS before, but we have no plans to move forward with that at this time.
-
options for other wireless cards- Only option is the Intel 6235 WiFi/Bluetooth combo card.
-
Creative Sound Core3D - quad core sound and voice processor- We went with Wavves Max Audio.
-
standard keyboard layout - like the DELL XPS 15, but with the XPS 13 color scheme- We're close to standard, but we still use the reduced size arrow/page up and down combo keys for spacing reasons.
Overall, I'd say this is a great idea, and we came pretty close to either exactly or close on most of the items on your list. Thank you very much for your submission.Apr 8, 2012 Comment Link

"Thank you very much for your idea submission. Many of the items you are proposing are under review for the next gen XPS 15. We may not be able to tick off every box on this next release, but I am confident we will have something significantly close enough to your proposal to interest you. I am unable to talk specifics just yet, but stay tuned!"
We don't comment upon rumours and speculation, but if you read what Bill wrote and then look at the features on my list, it would be a no-brainer that the new DELL XPS will be out around the release of the new intel Ivy Bridge or within the following months. The third of June is the official release date for intel's Ivy Bridge platform for laptops.
No official statement has been released from DELL, so all we can do is hang tight and wait for it ;)

That will be fine but as you said in the last lines that games will not run at that res with fluidity! At present no mobile gfx card can do that!Apr 1, 2012 Comment Link

Because of the current trend, I would like to suggest a screen resolution of 2560x1440 (16:9). This would be really nice for professional users and gamers can just set the resolution to 1920x1080 if they want to run their games smoothly. With a nVIDIA 600-series GPU, graphical artists and advanced users will have enough power to do their work at the native resolution, while gamers can game in FullHD or at native resolution with some quality adjustments.StigtriX
