I bought my inspiron 1420n right before you guys did this... but I'm still excited. Slow progress is a ton better than no progress. I can't wait until the netbook, xps/alienware desktop, mini sized, and all-in-one machines show up on the ubuntu page because you will have finally created a complete apple competitor. That's going to rock. Just make sure your support is solid too-- right now it seems ubuntu support isn't available 24-7 like windows support is, and it's not available via chat either, even though chat is easier for communicating clearly and you can do other things while on hold more easily. Those two things should be fixed as soon as possible after you've finished creating a full variety of ubuntu machines.Jul 20, 2008 Comment Link

Well done! Makes perfect sense that you're loading 8.04 rather than 8.04.1 since the former is the version validated for Dell hardware by Canonical. I'll place my order today. Appreciate the assistance.Jul 19, 2008 Comment Link

Here's the announcement: http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/07/18/select-systems-now-available-with-ubuntu-8-04.aspx We're factory-installing the initial 8.04 LTS, not 8.04.1. However, as most of you know, updating to 8.04.1 is extremely simply through the update manager.Jul 18, 2008 Comment Link

I'm ready to buy as soon as Dell is ready to offer Ubuntu 8.0.4.1 LTS pre-installed. If I have to install an OS myself, I might as well buy a bare bones box from some other manufacturer.Jul 15, 2008 Comment Link

Merged IdeaI noticed that the Dell Ubuntu computers are still shipping with Gusty - 7.10 - even though Ubuntu's current version is 8.04.1. Please update this!
