The One Laptop Per Child project, whatever you may think of it overall, has one universally-acclaimed feature: the sunlight-readable display. No matter what the lighting conditions, the screen is astonishingly clear -- indoors or in dark light, it looks like a normal screen; in bright light or sunlight, the screen becomes even sharper and is as readable as paper. Everybody I've shown it to says, "Yeah, yeah, sounds great" until they actually try it, and then they go "Wow! I don't believe it!" You won't believe it until you see it.
Go see it. Then get it on Dell laptops.
The lady who developed it is Mary Lou Jeppson; the company she spun off from OLPC to develop the screens is called Pixel Qi. Please go look them up, and do whatever you can to put their screens on your machines. First to market wins a prize -- my bucks.

They're now working on an iPad3-like screen. This 100% needs to come out with the new Win8 tablets/convertables.http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/nextgen_pixelqi_display-1024x433,0101-335274-0-2-3-1-jpg-.html

This is a great idea because it would also reduce eyestrain. My eyes get tired after working for a while on my laptop. This happens on fluorescent systems and it seems to me like it's worse on LED systems. Being able to use just the black-and-white, backlight-free mode of the pixel qi when I'm checking e-mail or using Word would be great.Aug 10, 2008 Comment Link

Is this a glossy or matte screen? For DELL glossy is becoming the standard while the IdeaStorm community wants matte.Jul 8, 2008 Comment Link

E-paper would be nice but the screen is here now -- and if you haven't seen it, you should. The only reason I don't carry around my XO as an ebook reader all the time is its size and its coloring -- it's designed for children and it shows.Jun 24, 2008 Comment Link

It'd be wonderful on the Mini Inspiron.
