The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.
This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).
This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models.
Status Update
Ubuntu is available on the Studio 15

nannod: if i remember correctly microsoft spent a lot of time and money trying to get a law past in china making it illegal to sell a computer without windows. i don't think they succeeded, but it was close.Aug 6, 2008 Comment Link

I agree with bjrosen 100%, I don't know why we can't get a Dell without an operating system and install it ourselves. I wanted to get a Dell but will not pay for something I don't want or need. I was told by Dell customer support that they can't test them properly without an operating system installed, what a lame excuse to make us take Vista...or Windows anything. I don't know why they exclude the entire market of people who know enough to load what they wish on their laptop, or have operating systems already.Aug 5, 2008 Comment Link

The Studio 15 looks like a good choice and there should be no problems with Linux. As long as it's using Intel components for everything it's fully Linux compatible. The current selection of Linux laptops is terrible, they have slow processors and low resolution screens. I want a laptop with at least a T9300, a 320G drive, 1650x1050 or better 15.4: screen, 4G of RAM, and Intel WiFI. The Studio 15 has all of that. What I don't want is Windows of any sort, and especially not Vista. I don't care which version of Linux it comes with, just as long as it's not Windows.Aug 2, 2008 Comment Link

If and when this is available with Linux I would be interested in purchasing one. But I fail to see why this wasn't released with Ubuntu as the main OS instead of Windows Vista. Vista in any incarnation would choke this system. I fail to see why they are still pushing Vista, when in fact so many are dumping it.Jul 31, 2008 Comment Link

I fully agree and I suggest Ubuntu is offered in the Studio Hybrid PC. Dell Studio Hybrid + Mythbuntu + DVB-S/DVB-T USB stick = perfect HTPC. Heck, offer Ubuntu as an option in every Dell computer!Jul 31, 2008 Comment Link

Yes, to my disappointment linux support was lacking for my wifi card was not supported, and I can almost bet my money on the fact that other peripherals are supported either. This is a must for me. Don't tie people to vista, which is knon to have a lot of problems! +1 on this!1 2 Next
