Matte screens on all Alienware laptops

Glossy screens look nice at first, but everyone knows that modern matte screens, which do not sacrifice brightness and contrast, are the best choice. And Alienware wants to be the best.

Please include matte screen options in the upcoming lineup!

    I'd like to extend my original idea. I don't just want matte screens, I want the option for GOOD screens. I want an option for a 90%+ gamut screen on the M14x, M17x and M18x, and at least 80% on the M11x.

    Go ahead and offer the current lousy screens on the base configuration, but give us the choice for better screens for a price, like you did with the RGBLED screen on the M17x R2 (if I recall correctly).

    Every review I've read on the M11x and M14x bashes the screen quality (see, e.g., reviews at notebookreview.com, notebookcheck.net, etc).

    A lot of IdeaStormers here have asked, demanded... a matte screen option (particularly for the M18X(n) or, at least, a non-glossy (or antiglare) display panel. We do not had get any answers so far... We feel "ignored".

    There is a simple way to solve the issue: Someone (Aikimox @ the notbookreview forum), not so affraid as most of us of loosing the warranty, has researched more than a bit and found that actually the display panel behind the E2E glossy cover is non-glare screen panel... So, he caaaarrreeefffuuulllly removed the E2E plastic cover and enjoy the non-glossy screen panel.

    What we can learn from this is that if Dellienware can solve the issue for all of us, they can implement a Snap-in / Snap-out E2E glossy cover (as with those color covers they offer for the lid of some laptops) and let the user decide when he want to use the glossy cover and when it's better for her/him to snap-it out... Now that will be designer/bussiness intelligence @ work!

    But even that easy solution propossal never receive any reaction or answer from Dellienware people. Sad, very sad indeed.

    Yes, the two best things I can say about the M14x R2 are "It's better than the old M14x" and "If you MUST have a 14-inch gaming notebook and can't accept a 15-inch notebook then the M14x R2 is probably the best choice currently on the market."

    However, the value proposition starts to look worse when you consider things like not being able to install new NVIDIA drivers (at least without jumping through hoops), the strange battery life drop compared to the old M14x (which "might" also have to do with the drivers) and the fact that you can either buy a smaller notebook with similar performance or a larger notebook with better performance for the same money.

    I loved my old Alienware M11x when it was new and I think Alienware would have CRUSHED the competition if they made a M11x R4 with the same processor and graphics as this M14x R2, along with an 11-inch MATTE screen with 1600x900 resolution. 

    On the other hand, I'd feel more positive about the M14X R2 if Alienware offered it with a Kepler-based GeForce GTX 660M instead of the just the GT 650M. I'd bet real money Dell's engineers could have found a way to make the thermals of the GTX 660M work inside this chassis. With a GTX class GPU (and full compatibility with NVIDIA's automatic driver updates) at this price point the M14x R2 would be a more compelling solution for mobile PC gaming.

    To add to my earlier post: Alienware screens are far from bad as they are now, but they can be so much better and ALEINWARE are mostly high-end computers, so it would be natural to include high quality screens. Be the first to add a FullHD matte screen to a 14'' gaming laptop! Be the first to implement IPS or compareable quality screens to gaming laptops!

    If you're first, you get free PR. If you do something noteworthy in addition (like upping the screen standard) you get new customers and fans too.

    Death to the glossy and low quality screens! The screen is the first thing you look at when testing a laptop and the center of attention when you use it. I would go as far as saying it's one of the most important parts of a laptop and has a big impact on the experience. It becomes even clearer when you deal with high-end laptops like ALIENWARE and XPS where everything else smells of pure quality.

    David_V, thanks for giving this some consideration.

    Having the possibility of user removal of the E2E cover would already be a step in the right direction, as long as it doesn't deteriorate the integrity of the laptop (i.e. making the lid too flimsy or causing the LCD panel itself to become loose).

    We hope the planning team will be blessed with receptiveness in their own consideration of the potentials... @ NBR we have many reports of the non-glare benefits (and look!) of the non-glare display under the blanket... sorry, under the E2E glossy cover ;)
    Let's hope they can consider it seriously (toghether with a higher resolution display!).

    I will forward the snap in idea to our planning team.

    Regarding the display, as you've noted below, this is more the ID of the E2E glass creating glare and less the display itself, although I can't say that without the E2E, there would not be any glare either.
