what about a notebook battery with a USB output and some leds that indicate the level of charge and a button to enable the charge of any smartphone, cameras, gps, tablets when travelling?

the battery should be easy to be detached and easily could charge a smartphone more than one time.

usb and button should be on the internal side of the battery to prevent accidental activation.

if the notebook remains at home when travelling, take the battery pack with you!

minimum cost and a great competitive advantage for Dell Notebooks!

Why not make an addon battery which gives the laptop or connected hardware some fresh juice through USB?
Maybe a battery which serves another purpose as well, like bing a portable HDD with a bettery function too...

How would you charge the battery if you leave the notebook at home?

The idea itself is not to have something to be recharged when empty as with a recharge-unit.
It is a contingency solution, it is very common to run out energy on an Iphone on a daily use (i.e. airport, plane) and you can access easily to this extra energy source and have the iphone fully recharged during commuting, avoiding the 10min charge in a hurry at the gate.
In a bag you can easily store your phone connected to battery pack
Also planning some days off in remote areas you can take with you two or three additional charges before you can plug-in your smartphone (or camera or or) in a wall
A battery pack on laptop can be of 5000 mah and could recharge two times a samsung note (2500mah) one of the "largest battery" now on a smartphone.

An additional possibilty is to have a separate docking station for recharging... but I'am mot sure if that make sense, after all I'am expecting you to use your laptop as well...

Having a USB port on the batery itself would be an excellent idea. I have had countless occasions where I needed a quick phone change and accidentally left my iPhone charger at home. It would be great to be able to travel with one or 2 less chargers and only bring the USB cable.

Currently my only option is to start the PC, then connect the phone once the PC is running. It would be great to be able to charge w/o having to boot up.
