Source TechLife | 18 Jun 2013 : Yahoo has received between 12,000 to 13,000 requests for user data from law enforcement agencies in the US between 1 December and 31 May this year, the company said Monday. The most common of these requests concerned fraud, homicides, kidnappings, and other criminal investigations, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and general counsel Ron Bell wrote in a blog post. The company did not disclose how many of the requests for customer data were under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which has been at the center of a controversy after reports surfaced that the government was collecting data from a large number of users under the Act, including call metadata from telephone customers of Verizon. "Like all companies, Yahoo! cannot lawfully break out FISA request numbers at this time because those numbers are classified; however, we strongly urge the federal government to reconsider its stance on this issue," the executives wrote. The Internet company joins other companies like Apple, Facebook and Microsoft that disclosed similar numbers over the weekend in a bid to convey greater transparency to their users, after reports in the Guardian and the Washington Post alleged that the US National Security Agency has real-time access to content on the servers of Google, Facebook and other Internet companies as part of a surveillance program called Prism. The companies have denied their participation. ? Following widespread criticism of the US government's surveillance programmes and the role of the Internet companies, Facebook, Google, Twitter and Microsoft last week called for greater transparency in disclosure of data on government requests for customer information. In a letter to US Attorney General Eric Holder and director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Robert Mueller, Google's chief legal officer David Drummond, for example, asked that the company should be allowed to publish in its Transparency Report aggregate numbers of national security requests, including disclosures under FISA, in terms of both the numbers received and their scope. Government restrictions on disclosure of the information has fueled speculation "that our compliance with these requests gives the US government unfettered access to our users' data," Drummond added. After obtaining limited permission from U.S. authorities, Facebook and Microsoft released data on requests from the government, but both didn't say how many were related to national security. Facebook said it had received between 9,000 and 10,000 requests from all government entities in the US including local authorities for the six months ending 31 December. The company, after discussions with security authorities, is allowed to include in a transparency report as part of an aggregate number and as a range all national security-related requests including FISA as well as National Security Letters, which was prohibited earlier. Microsoft said it had got between 6,000 and 7,000 requests affecting 31,000 to 32,000 consumer accounts for the same period. Apple said that from 1 December to 31 May, it received between 4,000 and 5,000 requests from US law enforcement for customer data. Between 9,000 and 10,000 accounts or devices were specified in those requests, which came from federal, state and local authorities and included both criminal investigations and national security matters, it said. Yahoo said Monday it plans to issue later this summer its first global law enforcement transparency report, which will cover the first half of the year. Other companies like Google already provide such updates, though Facebook's General Counsel Ted Ullyot said in a post last week that the company had not issued a transparency report in the past, as it would be incomplete and misleading because of the government restrictions on disclosure. Orders by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court often come with a gag order preventing those receiving the order to publicly discuss it. The order from the court that authorized the US National Security Agency to collect telephony metadata from customers of Verizon in the US also came with a gag order.

Someone needs to make a tablet with a focus on tv watching. I can see people taking these on trips and even just carrying them around the house for places they don't have TV's, like the kitchen. I would even possibly just mount one to the wall, say above the bathroom sink so can watch tv while getting ready for work. My idea includes a reasonably large screen, perhaps 10 inches. It would have a built in digital tuner and wifi. It would have a focus on viewing apps. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and VUDU would be a given as they are the most popular. A full web browser that supports flash would also be good for those sites that let you log in with your cable provider credentials. Other app accessibility would not really be needed. But perhaps email and some social apps would be good. I'm envisioning something relatively thin that would be made with perhaps some time spent being mounted in mind. Since it is a tv device, some might like to put it in areas where tv's aren't alwasy easy to put, but would be handy. Perhaps it could come with a wall mountable frame of sorts that would make it easy to remove the tablet when you wanted to take it on the go. A discreet power cable that could be pluged in while mounted would also be necessary.

We could visualize auch and ultimate laptops with infine battery and highest speed we tend ourself to limit with word that there couldn't be any of such devices. Indeed when I started to think about it I do had the many problems to complete the hypothetical device without any theoretical fault. Back almost half a year ago: I was preparing for the exam when I had my eye over Seebeck engine. It was intresting that while other devices waste their energy over heat it do use the heat to produce energy: but as with second law of thermodynamics we have that no machine is ideal, neither does the Seebeck engine, it do conduct some heat then only producing electricity. But since the engine have the same form of energy in exhaust and input hence we can use multiple engine simultaniously to attain the required efficiency > 50% now in our sytem the cores of laptop or mobile is in the sink inside cover of Seebeck engine. Now the cores are maintained at vero low temperature than environ where we could have superconductor. Now with conducted energy will be less then converted hence some part of the energy produced will be used for maintaining the same internal energy and another fraction to the calculations, and all computer stuffs.

Alienware m14x Left hinge consecutively breaking on multiple machines

I think Dell should pay more intrest in this topic because many people have this problem. If you are going to pay upwards of 1500$ for a gaming machine, I believe it should be durable and last. The problem is the left hinge on the Alienware M14x will break after "unusual wear and tear" as dell employees call it. This problem will occur after 15-30 months aprox. I have had my M14x for over 2 years and today I woke up and I opened my computer screen and i heard a crack followed by the left hinge breaking. Dell continuously gives the tech support to the costomers saying they need to pay 340$ to totally replace the lcd portion on the computer. As a student, I know that some people do not have very deep pockets. The hinge usually encounters slightly more resistance over time and eventuallu it gives, due to the stress. They did a total recall for this problem on the M11x. As we know the M14x has a larger customer base and yet with all these people with the same problem, Dell will still not fix this problem. Thier online liaison stated that the hinge being broken is wear and tear.No. The Complete Care Coverage warranty does not cover wear and tear. Covered = * Liquid spilled on or in unit * Drops, falls, and other collisions * Electrical surge Not covered = * Intentional acts of damage done by you or anyone else * Fire * Theft or loss * Normal wear and tear (hinges, bent AC adapter cabling, keyboard keys) * Consumables (batteries, LEDs) Liaison for Alienware and Monitors. Let me know on this thread if you need additional assistance. I dont know what the rest of the community makes of this problem but, suddenly one day the hinge breaking and not being able to close the screen on my machine without doing further damage, does not sound like normal wear and tear to me. this is a repost of the original desktop case design.its still made by me and you wont find it anywhere else than ideastorm.i used about 3-4 months on this design.due to the fact that when i started it i wasnt that good at scaling i made it about double the size of a normal desktop case.if it is to be implemented please rescale it :S because having a super tall computer wouldnt be that great.IMPORTANT!!!: this is a post to improve some of the things i forgot to include to the original post!the USB ports will be on the front above the cd/dvd rom door/latch and you can put around 1-4 USB 2 or 3 ports there if you want to.all other fans/ inputs etc... will also have regular placements as in most other computers.IMPORTANT NOTE TO MODERATORS: you are allowed to change the design of the case so do not sk where you want things because you can just fix that wherever you want :DPictures:ignore the fan placements in the picture above!!!! Ability to disable usage of battery of a laptop in office when connected to Docking station

HI,I would like to present an idea in which if a software is developed which can actually disable the usage of battery when connected to the docking station and connect the laptop to a DC power supply as soon as you unplug the diocking station the battery should come up, it can gradually increase the battery life and also will avoid overcharging of Battery hence enhancing the battery life of laptop.

Hello everyone,I am aware that this is a consumer line, but there is one thing that everyone for sure appreciates, the gorgeous design and the edge to edge glass look.UltraSharp Line would be a good alternative in every aspect, except for the looks.WQHD is a great resolution and provides a very good PPI relation as the dot pitch is very small. 1920x1080 is simply a bad option for a screen of this size (27''). This would put this monitor in a higher price range but I think it would still be enough of an investment from Dell to provide this option.I can pretty much say that I would buy this screen immediately if:Main Idea:WQHD 16:9 2560x1440 Resolution is Available;Additional Ideas:- Good Response Times (smaller than 8ms G2G) as I can see some gamers using this monitor;- Very soft anti-glare coating (but this isn't a priority for me);- Adjustable Stand would be a PLUS!- DisplayPort / USB 3.0;- Touch control buttons;- Slimmer Bezel;However, the greatest thing I would certainly like to see is a monitor line with the technical capabilites of UltraSharp Series mixed with the awesome design of the S series. Another option would be to simply grab the IPS panel from the U2313HM and put it inside the S2740L frame.I'm pretty sure that there are others in here that share the same opinion as myself.Best regards,Eduardo

XPS 18 with Haswell

So quite simple. I would like a XPS 18 with the new Haswell processors. I also expect Intel Graphics 5,000 or better, and better battery life. It also needs 802.11ac. And I hope you keep all the good configurations (i5 with stand and i7 with stand).Just letting you know, my grandfather wants a i5 XPS 18, but I'm telling him to wait for the Haswell version. :)
