High-gamut or IPS Matte screens

Sat May 25 09:52:53 GMT 2013 - 2 minutes ago

I'd agree with this idea 10000%. Whilst the panels in the range are of acceptable quality for the average user, there are a lot of folk out there (myself included) that would LOVE the option of a matte screen versus a reflective glossy screen. If it's possible to put a high quality IPS panel into a Precision, it's possible to put one in an Alien, too.

Whist 18.4" IPS panels might not be a popular size or readily available from manufacturers, I would think that this is worth looking into for the 18x. As for the 17x, this should be a fairly simple thing to offer as panels already exist of this nature. Smaller panels could also be looked into as well, but I am not sure about the demand for such in a smaller form factor, such as the 14x.

As for resolution, if Apple can cram a 2560x1600 panel in a 13" MacBook, there should be plenty of scope for Dell to offer similar native resolutions for the same or larger sized panels in the AW range. Even Samsung are planning on using an even higher resolution screen in their latest 13.3" panel: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/05/20/new-samsung-displays-have-higher-resolution-than-macbook-pro-retina/.

It's time for Alienware to realise the demand for these options - note, I said "options" as I appreciate that not everyone will want to pay a premium for this kind of thing, I know I would be prepared to, though.

High-gamut or IPS Matte screens

Hi everyone,

I've put some thought into this idea and have decided to promote it. Even though I may not necessarily be willing to spend hundreds of dollars (extra) on these options, I'm sure quite a few people will. While we are at it, why not have 1440p resolution available if you order high-end graphics (i.e. 780M).

I'm sure the web developrs at Dell/Alienware can enable/create some form of compatibility like what they have now. For example, you can't order the 3D bundle with the AMD graphics.

Anyway, this idea is promoted by me. I just hope if it's implemented, the prices are reasonable.

High-gamut or IPS Matte screens

Thank you for the input, Cy_J. In my opinion, screen resolution on these laptops is not as important as type (glare or anti-glare) and overall screen quality (color gamut, viewing angles, accuracy, and contrast). Given that the screens excel in quality, though, higher resolution offerings would be O.K.

Thanks for posting the idea Prolixious.  It is always nice to have the NBR members on the site. While you all are discussing the screens, how about some feedback on screen resolution as well. :)

Shad-pad, a new type of computer interface

Thank you for posting.  Besides the hover feature that supports multiple fingers, what advantage would this device have over an external touchpad?

Clarify Original Configuration Parts List

Thank you for posting dfrandin. I understand your frustration as I took a look at my own service tag after reading your idea. My thinking is that the main point of the tool is to provide the part numbers in case you need to order a replacement rather than providing details such as processor speed and hard drive size.  Still, I agree that is could be a little easier to read.

Implement also AMD graphics, like all consoles have done it!

Thank you for posting Rebel333. I too think the new AMD line up is pretty interesting. I look forward to seeing some true comparison to Intel's offerings by one of the respected tech sites. My main concern is the performance/power consumption ratio.

What are your thoughts on the extra graphics processing power on systems that may not be used for gaming?
