Precision m6700- Multitouch option on covet edition

Thu Jun 20 05:18:59 GMT 2013 - 5:18 AM

I think that the user experience would be greatly enhanced on this workstation, with users who would be using this system with Windows 8.

My particular line of work is in game development- specifically games for tablet and mobile- many of which use touch controls.

However, I also was looking for a system that still had the graphical capabilities to handle traditional PC games and PC game engines- for both work, and yes for leisure as well. Most gaming laptops do not have a touch interface, thus making them not suitable platforms for testing and developing games that rely on multitouch. Conversely, most Windows 8 tablets have a touch interface but not a discrete graphics card or the graphical muscle to handle more resource intensive software such as core pc games or game development tools.

I was looking to see there was a workstation out there that perhaps offered both of these attributes in one machine.

I am aware that the lower end m6700 regular has the multitouch option, but I am specifically asking about a touch option on the covet edition because it has such a high res display, it would be great to have that screen option, but with multitouch. Also I am partial to the Phoenix Red color that the covet model comes in.

Additionally, it would furthermore be useful if all models of the m6700 also came with the option to have a pressure sensitive stylus, in similar to what the m6600 was offered with, towards the end of this lifecycle. Aside from multitouch input with fingers, there are also certain tasks that I would want to use a digitizer/stylus for, ie. creating diagrams and sketching designs.

XPS 18 with Haswell

The XPS 18 looks like a great machine.  The integrated graphics improvements and increased battery life offered by Haswell seem perfect for it.  So I have to wonder, why the delay?  Is Dell having heat problems, performance problems, or is some other issue causing this to not come to market?  As excited as I am for this machine, I don't think I want the first one off the line anymore.

I do see some models with the 3rd gen i7 processors but not Haswell yet.  I can understand why you would wait. I had a chance to play around with the XPS 18 and was quite proud that it is a Dell product. Of course I may be a little biased. :)

Dell recently released some newer models, you need to check them out.

802.11ac? Should be 802.11 b/g or 802.11 b/g/n

Not all wireless N adapters work on 5.0GHz. Some adapters work on 2.4GHz only. Please check the specifications carefully.

Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

optical is so 1990s... a USB stick with all necesary drivers (especially the wireless card drivers) and standard documentation is more acceptable.  Also elimintate the tree killing phamplets.  Just the mandatory stickers and perhaps a cool looking USB 2 (for compatibility) stick in a "special" looking window in the dell box.
Packaging can be labeled - "Start Here" or something a bot catchier.  - SW should be self installing.

Better screen apect ration for future precision

Please see http://www.pcworld.com/article/2042121/laptops-with-super-high-def-displays-worth-price.html#tk.rss_all

I'd like to pay extra to get a Precision with a super high-def display.

Please provide something crave-worthy and not offer the super low def display that's on the current machines.

"But I would like Gorilla Glass 3 on the glass instead of 2"
Gorilla Glass (of any generation) is scratch, not shatter, resistant.  Wouldn't you prefer a shatter resistant screen?
