Ideas:

Include nvidia and ati video cards in ubuntu laptops and desktops

Status: Implemented

When shopping for an Ubuntu Dell, I've noticed that it is not possible to order one with a video card from ATI or NVIDIA. For some users of Linux, such as those into 3D modeling work for artistic or scientific purposes, the Intel video card option may simply not be enough. And with laptops, upgrading or changing the video card is much more of a hassle than with desktops. Therefore, why is the option to buy a laptop with an nvidia or ati card listed under a Vista machine, but not under an identical machine pre-loaded with Linux? Unfortunately, users that require both Linux and superior 3d acceleration performance may wind up forced into buying a Vista-preloaded Dell (and subsequently tossing the Vista disc in the garbage) just so they can have a Linux box with an ati or nvidia graphics card preinstalled. In addition to adding unnecessary cost to the consumer, this scenario will also distort sales figures information regarding Vista and Ubuntu. Please consider offering Ubuntu-preloaded Dells with the option of an nvidia and/or ati graphics card preinstalled. Thank you. Implemented Status Update Please see Vida_K's comment below

Dell Mini Ubuntu (Linux) Missing Webcam

It would be great if the Dell Mini product site would add back the webcam option for the Unbuntu Linux version of the product. When the site first launched http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-9 , both the 0.3 megapixel camera and the 1.3 megapixel camera were available as configuration options, but they have since been dropped from the site when ordering the linux version of the product. Any ideas from Dell on why the change in product offering? Any chance that this will be added back in as a product configuration offering? I have to imagine that the drivers for a webcam are available, and if not, there are plenty of developers who would be interested in building them. This site lists a lot of information on getting a webcam running on a linux pc: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Webcam-HOWTO/ Status Update

hi,  I use Ubuntu in my dell. it just great specially the Ibex which just works for everything and really fast in 1GB ram. I am looking to buy a netbook .. I was eagerly waiting for dell mini 12 for 2 months when the news came up, as I don't like 10 inch screen with low resolution. But I am disapointed  to find that dell decides Vista instead of Ubuntu. Vista is even slow in 2GB dual core machines .What performance will it give in netbook ?? Ultimately I have to remove the OS to install Ubuntu in it. So there no reason to pay microsoft for it's OS which I am not going to use. It would be nice if dell mini 12 is also lanched with ubuntu like mini 9 with less price .So lot of people like who wanna use Ubuntu will save some money . Status Update Please see vida_k's comment

The new Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope GNU/Linux has many great features to make it a significant upgrade from the 8.04. Some improvements are: Much faster boot times due to ext4 file system and other optimizationsCleaner graphics and a better notifications mechanismNewer Linux KernelImproved Power ManagementImproved cd burner applicationImproved handling of multiple monitors, formerly a sore spot for LinuxPerformance increases across the boardBetter themes and backgrounds I also suggest that Dell keep with the latest LTS upgrades yearly to remain cutting edge. Explain how dropping extended hardware warranty indicates whole-hearted Linux support

I think every Dell customer is interested in an honest and trustworthy partner Dell. So, please, explain somewhere, why you dropped extended hardware warranty on your Linux systems, you surely have good reasons that just need to be explained. If you don't have good reasons except maybe Microsoft's incentive plans (which is what probably most people expect), please tell us too. Linux on Vostro?

I recently bought a Vostro 1400, which came with Vista Home Basic.. I'd MUCH have preferred to get the system with Ubuntu installed on, but alas it appears Dell isn't planning to sell Vostro laptop/desktop systems with preinstalled Linux. Of course, the system now has Ubuntu installed on it, and other than a few nits on getting the webcam/hibernate/suspend working, it was a piece of cake. I'd just have preferred to not pay the "Microsoft Tax" on this purchase... Is there any plans to supply Linux on the Vostro line of systems? Linux Wireless, Video Drivers

Make the drivers for your wireless cards available for those of us who run Linux. I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501, but there are no Linux native drivers for it. I also have the ATI graphics Radeon Xpress 1150, but no Linux drivers available for it. It would be great if Linux drivers were available for all the hardware you make and sell. Ubuntu LAPTOP

Linux fans are thrilled about the new image at http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/IMAGE_Dell_Makes_Ubuntu_Official/ (you took down the original, probably due to the Digg Effect, so our feelings are obvious.) The problem here is that geeks often build their own desktops, and it would be a shame for this venture to return lackluster sales, causing Dell to regret the decision. PLEASE offer Ubuntu laptops with wireless support. If video cards and drivers were installed that would allow Beryl/Compiz functionality, I can pretty much guarantee that I would buy one. So would many others. Implemented Status Update Please see Vida_K's comment below
