I think Dell should redesign the XPS. The current XPS (even XPS 15) is too bulky to carry around. I love the specifications that Dell offers for XPS. But, the only thing that draws me back from buying it is the bulkiness status update: The new XPS z line systems are much more portable and thinner. The 15.6" XPS 15z just recently launched with more sizes to come. Thanks for the idea!

As a consultant responsible for dozens of companies supply of PC's and notebook computers, I'm having a harder and harder time finding anything decent at Dell to recommend! As Dell pares down their brands, getting rid of Studio, and Studio XPS, we're now left with the unappealing and plastic-ey consumer Inspiron brand, and the what-used-to-be-top-of-the-line-but-now-is-ho-hum, XPS. Is it just me, or is the new Dell XPS portable line void of that classy, bleeding-edge technology that we used to know and love? Now, not only are they (IMHO) ugly, but they are now just cookie-cutter systems that really offer nothing that other vendors also have. What I miss are the "middle brands", the Studio and Studio XPS. Those were innovative, beautiful, and something that when seen, were wanted! All glass screens, sleek designs, semi-bleeding-edge technology, and for just a bit more money than the classless consumer Best Buy junk. Dell? Hire some design people. Listen to those of us that USE computers, that want the latest features, and incorporate those in your products. YES, an OPTION for Hi-res screens are REQUIRED. 1600x900 is nice on a 14" screen, not a 17.3". That is not what I want to spend my hard earned money on when I buy an XPS. If you're going to have a high-end brand like XPS, make it count. Make people envious to want one. We're not all teen gamers, so running around with an Alienware design notebook is a bit embarrasing. Give us power, and package it in a classy, sophisticated design. Build it, and they will come. Status Update: Please see bill_b's comment for further details. Thanks for posting!

XPS15 could look a little better, but more importantly, the insides need some fixing.1. GPU offers must be GDDR5 (the G being important). See notebookcheck.net and find out what Class I GPUs are missing from your options. Middle to weak Class II GPUs are useless in XPS computers. Keep those in Vostros or something else that isn't geared towards media/gamers.2. Chiclet keyboard would be better. HP will be offering that.3. Don't need 2 headphone jacks. Keep one, and let people use splitters if they want to. Please put a glow ring around the port.4. Make the power port stable. Got to hand it to Mac for making it a magnet, which doesn't potentially damage the laptop port with frequent plug ins.5. FHD always available. Don't drop the 900p like HP. Keep it in stock especially when SB is reintroduced.6. Please read the threads on notebookreview.com for the Dell XPS 15 L501. Find the issues and correct them.A MacBook killer will never exist unless you spend the time to make a quality competitor. XPS should be that. I'd love to see a THIN Dell XPS model, but with the same look at the Studio XPS 13 and 16. I'd love to try out a dell for the first time for personal use, but I'm not liking the thickness. I tested out a dell in Best Buy and I felt like I was using a computer from 2003. The XPS model is susposto be an higher end model right? Make it thin. Even if you have to add a vent to the side, at least you could make the vent look good while still providing air flow. Dell needs to put more focus on reducing the thickness of laptops when designing them, Both the current generation of Inspiron and XPS laptops are thicker than the previous gen. Also, these laptops are more wedge-shaped than ever before. Dell's design is going backwards. We want SUPER THIN and relatively UNIFORM THICKNESS for laptops. My Dell Inspiron 1764 is thinner than the current 17R, I would buy another 1764 anyday over the fat wedge 17R. The Next Generation of Dell Laptops have to be around 1" thick around the entire laptop. Not ,74" thick at the front and a crazy thick 1.5" thick at the back. Thats ridiculous design. I don't want some ugly wedge. The previous gen hinge design is also better than the current one. It allows for the battery compartment to stick out in the back without sticking out of the frame. Dell needs a better hinge design for next gen. I mean this design that currently HP and Apple are using: Alos note the better frame design thats all alluminun and uniform thickness. Also only about 1" thick at all regions, very thin nice laptop. This is what Dell needs for its XPS line. But keep the current touchpad, the HP one has poor buttons on it, THIS IS WHAT DELL NEEDS TO MAKE THE XPS LINE BETTER, UPRANK THIS PLEASE. Expand the ability to buy the OS DVD from the Inspiron line to include the XPS line.
I built an Inspiron desktop earlier today and saw that I could buy the OS DVD for the modest fee of $15.00. I had already asked for that to be done in this idea and it has been implemented on the Insiron`s. http://www.ideastorm.com/ideaView?id=087700000000fJBAAY I needed more features than the Inspiron allowed in the build, so I built an XPS. Dell should improve some major gripes on their new XPS series!

Dell should improve some of the little demerits of their XPS laptops as these although are minor, have turned out to be a major gripe. These are the only issues stopping me to buy the XPS, and I really want the XPS to improve in the next revision. Like: 1) Clumsy looking design - The design doesn't impress much in terms of beauty and eye-catchiness, especially due to the awkward-looking screen. It also lacks the most modern chicklet keyboards. 2) The display needs to be improved. According to the reviews, it doesn't prove to be good in terms of viewing angles, etc. meaning that it's not great for outdoor use. 3) Very bulky and heavy design. 4) Poor battery life. 5) Not the best cooling capabilities, as, when carrying out pretty heavy workloads, the XPS 15 notebook gets intensely hot from the bottom, and moreover, the CPU (for i7) temps can go upto 94C, and the graphics card also remains at dangerous temps of 98C. 6) Some users have reported that there is a screeching noise from the XPS 15's JBL speakers, which seems to be more of a computer's code-like sound. 7) Lack of a few ports like VGA, etc. So I still expect that dell might fix these issues in the next revision. And if this happens, then dell may find an enormous increase in the popularity and overall ratings of their XPS!
Annoying hardware configurations on new XPS range

The only thing that is stopping me from ordering your new XPS 15 laptops is your ANNOYINGLY STUPID HARDWARE CONFIGURATIONS. Nvidia 435M 2GB....!! are you serious...?? that card doesnt have enough power to use 1GB of memory effectively and you are throwing 2GB at it.....plus if i go for the 435M i have to upgrade my CPU to i7-740QM (again why on earth did you skip a i7-720QM option) which further increase my cost unnecessarily and i have to let go the Nvidia OPTIMUS tech also which should have been highly useful for conserving my laptop's battery. Also why have you not included cards like 445M and 460M as upgrades is out of my common sense.you could have had a killer laptop in the form of XPS 15 if it was not for your STUPID HARDWARE CHOICES. It may get you more money (as the users opting for a 435M also have to take i7-740QM) per laptop but it will also drive away some aware users like me.learn some lessons from ASUS on matching hardware configurations. This is directed at the DELL MODERATORS, TECH SUPPORT STAFF AND MARKETING AND SALES DEPARTMENTS: Why oh why are you still showing the i7 with the NVIDIA card as having Optimus? And why oh why are you still showing the XPS17 as having up to 8 hours of battery life??? And why don't you drop the whole Push2TV teasers when you hit the XPS units and make it an accessory or feature that ONLY appears when configuring or ordering a unit that is really compatible? Why not train your sales force on the various component properties, real performance matters and configuration compatabilities? Why not offer a 1080 HD screen on the XPS17? Why not offer full recovery and media discs for XPS owners? Why not take steps to improve or meet the teaser "up to 8hrs battery" claim for the i7? Why doesn't Dell corporate look into these issues and respond with a statement, comment, etc or even take the giant leap to contact customers who purchased these units which do not live up to the teasers? Primarily anyone with an i7 740 processor and Nvidia card? Anyone with an XPS (new design) purchased? It is dismaying to say the least that Dell is not taking steps to demonstrate their committment to customer service and loyalty. Look at Toyota and Lexus, their recent need to recall vehicles and how they are winning and keeping customer loyalty and support. Please, don't remove this post and please, Dell higher ups, respond to these matters. Across forums in the various Dell community boards we see a repeated request by owners or would be owners for Dell response, feedback or guidance. This is a weakness. why there is not a XPS 15" laptop in Brasil?

I note that in all Dell site of all American Latina country there are a XPS 14" , 15" and 17" laptop , but not in Brasil.In Brasil there is only XPS 14" laptop. There are a lot of people here, in Brasil, who would like to buy this laptop, but with a 15" screen..Please think about ...
