Where has the innovation gone in Dell laptops?

As a consultant responsible for dozens of companies supply of PC's and notebook computers, I'm having a harder and harder time finding anything decent at Dell to recommend! As Dell pares down their brands, getting rid of Studio, and Studio XPS, we're now left with the unappealing and plastic-ey consumer Inspiron brand, and the what-used-to-be-top-of-the-line-but-now-is-ho-hum, XPS. Is it just me, or is the new Dell XPS portable line void of that classy, bleeding-edge technology that we used to know and love? Now, not only are they (IMHO) ugly, but they are now just cookie-cutter systems that really offer nothing that other vendors also have. What I miss are the "middle brands", the Studio and Studio XPS. Those were innovative, beautiful, and something that when seen, were wanted! All glass screens, sleek designs, semi-bleeding-edge technology, and for just a bit more money than the classless consumer Best Buy junk. Dell? Hire some design people. Listen to those of us that USE computers, that want the latest features, and incorporate those in your products. YES, an OPTION for Hi-res screens are REQUIRED. 1600x900 is nice on a 14" screen, not a 17.3". That is not what I want to spend my hard earned money on when I buy an XPS. If you're going to have a high-end brand like XPS, make it count. Make people envious to want one. We're not all teen gamers, so running around with an Alienware design notebook is a bit embarrasing. Give us power, and package it in a classy, sophisticated design. Build it, and they will come. Status Update: Please see bill_b's comment for further details. Thanks for posting!

Dell needs to put more focus on reducing the thickness of laptops when designing them, Both the current generation of Inspiron and XPS laptops are thicker than the previous gen. Also, these laptops are more wedge-shaped than ever before. Dell's design is going backwards. We want SUPER THIN and relatively UNIFORM THICKNESS for laptops. My Dell Inspiron 1764 is thinner than the current 17R, I would buy another 1764 anyday over the fat wedge 17R. The Next Generation of Dell Laptops have to be around 1" thick around the entire laptop. Not ,74" thick at the front and a crazy thick 1.5" thick at the back. Thats ridiculous design. I don't want some ugly wedge. The previous gen hinge design is also better than the current one. It allows for the battery compartment to stick out in the back without sticking out of the frame. Dell needs a better hinge design for next gen. I mean this design that currently HP and Apple are using: Alos note the better frame design thats all alluminun and uniform thickness. Also only about 1" thick at all regions, very thin nice laptop. This is what Dell needs for its XPS line. But keep the current touchpad, the HP one has poor buttons on it, THIS IS WHAT DELL NEEDS TO MAKE THE XPS LINE BETTER, UPRANK THIS PLEASE. Dell Design Studio for Inspiron 17 Laptop

Dell Inspiron 17 should also get personalization with the design studio like with Inspiron 15, Studio 15, and Studio 17. and add in the other studio and inspiron laptops into the mix as well. Promote Please! More Personalization choices for more laptops! Status Update The Design Studio is now an option when purchasing the Inspiron 17

addition of 13.3" to Vostro notebook line

Am I alone in wanting a less bulkier notebook? I think it would be great, if reducing general bulk is not viable, to have a 13.3" screen option in the Vostro notebook line, with the configuration options of a 14.1" with dedicated graphics. It was possible on a XPS1210, Dell should not have a problem with 13.3", unless it was some sort of marketing decision to go with bigger notebooks. From what I've seen, Dell's 12.1" notebooks in the past were big sellers, I don't think there are any worries of not selling enough of them to not warrant an option. As I travel a lot for a small company, I would really love the idea of a more compact notebooks with the least sacrifice for power as much as possible while keeping the attractive price range and small business-minded features of a Vostro line. Improve the look of Inspiron laptops by removing some of the rubber nubs from the screen.

Those rubber nubs around the screen are so ugly. How can Dell remove them from the XPS m1330 but not the Inspiron? They could at lease remove some of them or make them blend in more. How many do you really need?

Smaller rubber feet that don't fall off

The rubber feet on my Inspiron are big and get snagged when slipping into my computer bag. One has already fallen off. Make them slimmer and less prone to falling off. Status Update Please see chris_b's comment

Mid Tier 17" XPS notebook.

Has all the features of the Inspiron 1720. But also has: 1. Gigabit ethernet. 2. Choice of Nividia 8700m GT 512mb, 8800 GS 256 mb - 512 mb 3. HDMI port 4. Full 101-104 key keyboard. 5. Hybrid HDTV tuner 6. 7200 rpm dual HD. 7. S/PDIF out 8. Subwoofer. 9. Blu ray/HD DVD hybrid drive. (plays both) [extra cost here] All for ~$2500 -$2700 (as oppossed to the >$3000 cost of a top tier XPS) The gap between a fully loaded Inspiron 1720 and an 1730 XPS should be filled by such a machine. Easier for most to justify spending an extra $300 - $400 more than an Inspiron 1720 for a mid tier XPS, than it is to spend $1000+ more for a top tier XPS notebook. Some customers like to play the latest games but do not require the bragging rights or top notch performance of a top tier XPS because we also use our laptops for business and other endeavors.
