The vastro v130 is the laptop I was waiting for to have a truly portable computer. I almost bought the V130 until several co workers warned me that the V130 was not portable at all because you have to be chained to the electric outlet most of the time. Practicaly , it not a business laptop nor a portable laptop with such a poor battery performance. I am surprised that Dell R&D went through the trouble of designing a thin and a beautifully shaped laptop for mobilty and portabilty and then fit it with an unacceptable battery !!!, what a waist of potentially a great product . As a loyal Dell customer, I am painfully considering Macbook air and willing to pay more for a real batteryprotabilty . Dell is capable making it right please do so Status Update: This Idea was Implemented in the release of the v131 as outlined by bill_b in the comments. Thank you for posting!

Dell: PLEASE create a laptop power squid! Schools using clusters or carts full of computers, and the cords are everywhere! One brick with 4 or 6 laptop connections would be fantastic! Less cords, less plugs, less mess, more efficient (one larger brick has gotta be less cost than 4 or 6 smaller ones). We have carts of computers, each cart has 20-ish power adaptors snaking through, getting tangled, needing to be removed and put back, etc. When we use the laptops in a science lab, we may have 4 on the same lab table, but we need 4 sets of adaptors/plugs/cables/powerstrips/pain! Status Update Custom-built Mobile Computing Station equips classrooms with a cart to store, manage and network up to 24 netbooks with one Ethernet and power cord. Please read here for more details.

I dont know why dell hasnt done this yet. switch all monitors on desktops and notebooks to LED. did you know that you can run an LED screen at full brightniess and it uses less power than a LCD monitor at the lowest brighting level?!? its cheaper, its energy efficent, and it needs to be done! promote this, if you demote i wanna know why! Status Update Please see this announcement on current options and our plans to fully transition to LEDs over the next 12 months

Please provide batteries for all notebooks that will have a longer life. I've had my Inspiron barely a year and I already need a new battery. Alternatively, replacement batteries could be a tad less expensive. Aftermarket batteries are far less expensive than the ones posted for sale on the Dell site. Hence, Dell could maintain customer loyalty and could recoup with volume sales should they continue with the standard issue batteries. Status Update Please see Vida_K's comment below

Intel and AMD have both been developing Ultra Low Voltage CPUs, computer chips that run on 1/5 of the power of traditional computer chips. The CPU is a good start, now Dell can work with Intel and / or AMD to develop a FULLY ULV Notebook - ALL the subcomponents using significantly less power than standard notebook systems. [Gateway's ULV CPU powered notebook.] Another big component to change is the display, static 'ePaper' notebook screens that can maintain the image even when powered off. Electricity is only used when changing the display, and even then - power only used down to the pixel level, while non-changing pixels consume little or no power at all. Back-Lit by new ULV LEDs, that adjust their intensity based off of a ambient light sensor - using even less power when in a darker room, vs. a sunny patio. The screen size can be 12" widescreen, and still be able to provide a good movie viewing experience. No Hard Drive, No CD Drive - those power hungry components can be put into the ULV notebook docking station. Use Flash drives and USB memory sticks only. I would imagine a SSD Flash drive equipped notebook that could run for hours off of a single 9 volt battery (rechargeable of course!) The New ULV Dell Notebook With an ULV notebook, you can replace the battery with a water powered fuel cell, and cover the notebook screen lid with the new 40%+ efficient solar cells, and have the FIRST 'free power' ULV notebook on the market. Samsung has been a leader in ULV technology in Korea: Status Update

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college. Gopal Status Update: Please see bill_b's comment on Dell's environmental efforts. Thanks for posting!
