In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually... Dell should adopt a Carbon Neutral program for its products or at least make it an option for consumers in their ordering process. People seem to have the impression that Apple is doing a lot for the environment, when the reality is - Dell's doing more and can do even more! Status Update Check out the Idea in Action on Dell's goal for carbon neutrality.

Like most power users I love to get new equipment often, but older equipment keeps accumulating because reselling it is usually a lot of hassle and recycling programs are few. I'd love to see a regular trade-in program that would give reasonable compensation for used Dell computers offered without MarketVelocity. It would be better to think in advance about possible uses of returned equipment and in-source the processing of it. Status Update Please see todd_d's comment below

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4310 "The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) has released it's evaluation for electronic products that meet "green" standards. Included in this test are desktops, monitors, notebooks and Tablet PCs." Of the 61 Dell products evaluated NONE received less than a Silver and 7 received Gold status. http://www.epeat.net/ Status Update Please see jackie_c's comment

This is probably the BIGGEST polution issue with computers in general. The printer cartdriges CANT be re-used, CANT be re-filled, and for some reason, i CANT just buy 1 colour, for my colour printer.... like BLACK (word docs...). Instead, dell could have the cartridges sent BACK to Dell, to be cleaned re-filled. etc.... Just a thought. Although i dont go through that many cartridges (so far, 1 re-load in.... 5 years), comapnies, printer places (kinko's or whatever) school's, they all use a horendus amount of ink. Having recently been involved with rolling out a large number of Dell Optiplex systems. I found it amazing how many boxes, plastic bags, cable ties & polystyrene had to be removed and disposed of. This ended up taking much more time than installing and configuring the systems. I understand that Dell need to protect their products during shipping but there must be away of making the unpackaging process easier for corporate customers as well as reducing the environmental impact. Status Update: We are recuding over 20 million pounds of packaging over the next 4 years. Read more here.

Why does the Direct2Dell site automatically buffer every video on a web page? This is a complete waste of energy and slows load times for the page when there are several videos posted. Make it more like youtube where you click on the video and then it buffers.

I think Dell should become THE "green" hightech-company. As far as I know until now there is no hightech company which claims to be the most ecological responsible one.
